Nara Prefecture, known for its deer in Nara Park and its numerous temples and shrines, is particularly popular among French tourists. According to statistics from the Japan Tourism Agency, approximately one in four French visitors to Japan visit Nara. Our research revealed that many tourists visit Nara specifically to interact with the deer and to see historical buildings such as Todai-ji Temple. We also heard comments that Nara is "less crowded than Kyoto and offers a more authentic Japanese experience." According to travel agencies, French tourists tend to prefer trips that allow them to experience the history, culture, and lifestyle of a place, and Nara, with its many World Heritage sites and national treasures, is highly regarded. Furthermore, the influence of French writer and Minister of Culture André Malraux, who highly praised Nara's Buddhist art, is also seen as one of the reasons why Nara's appeal has spread in France.
