If you buy a game that you were able to play and then updated to be unplayable then you should be able to get a refund

I'm going to be honest believing the same devs who have done a poor job of optimizing their game in UE4 over the last 10 years would do a good job optimizing in UE5 isn't just foolish, it's insane. They've had 10 whole years to get the game running better and yet it still runs poorly compared to other much better looking UE4 games. That doesn't sound like a studio capable of making an optimized game to me, what it sounds like is a studio slapping a new coat of paint and calling it a day. At this point my only hope is that they just have an old legacy build of the game available that's on UE4 and just doesn't receive updates.

if youve used their UE4 editor youd know they needed to completely rebuild the game, and it probably made more sense to just do it in UE5

You said it: Squad is 10 years old at this point and the UE4 version runs really bad to this day.. Leaves me to conclude that it's not a UE5 issue, really...

It’s hard to beat Arma Reforger. Bohemia Interactive hire incredible programmers. You can’t beat a well-made, proprietary game engine.

I agree that alot of UE5 games are unoptimized, but i also agree with your sentiment of "dont hate the engine, hate the dev", while i am not a game dev so take what i say with a grain of salt, i view UE5 as a toolbox, you just have to know how to use the tools correctly, because devs like embark has proved that when the tools are used correctly, it can be used to make something beautiful

An important part of the "just upgraded lol" argument for us that need to upgrade. I can't simply get another graphics card, I'd need to update my motherboard to be able to upgrade my CPU and GPU. Not simply a single purchase equal to buying a car, but multiple things are needed to even attempt to upgrade. I can't afford that, nor can I afford a new PC just for squad.

I couldn't play Space Marine 2 on launch because of graphics, but notably can now that they took time to optimize over the year it's been out. It's disappointing how often devs ignore optimization as if that isn't precisely the thing that made games impressive in every gaming golden age.

on one hand it is very cool to see dev teams updating a game so thoroughly it becomes basically a new experience but on the other it is arguably unethical and anti consumer to do it to the point where it causes the game to become unstable / unplayable for parts of the community.

I can argue for both sides but at end of day think maybe this should have been a sequel - not an update - for Squad 2 in UE5

Squad was released on UE4 ten years ago. They're porting it to, not developing it on, UE5. It's not comparable. If they want to develop and release Squad 2 on UE5, good for them. Preventing me from playing a game I bought is nonsensical.

Literally every clip where he is trying to impress me with graphics and high quality gameplay get over shadowed by the constant lag and stuttering I see him going through lol.

Ready or not did this. An update that requires a shift in the minimum hardware required to simply run the game should allow people with lower end systems to get a refund, its simply not fair

It's not even about updating your computer, it's about the server being able to run it. And on the last playtest it was servers that weren't running properly, not necessarily client side computers.

THEY HAVE DONE GODS WORK WITH THE OPTIMIZATION ON UE5, its unreal how i actually get better if not equivalent frames to UE4. I have an intel arc b580 + ryzen 5 5900x and i run the game @1440p max settings, besides shadows and i get 60 - 70 fps. I CANT WAIT TILL THEY DROP THIS UPDATE ITS BEAUTIFUL CHEFS KISS
