If I were moving to the Dominican Republic in 2027, I would do a few things VERY differently.

After living in the Dominican Republic for more than four years, I’ve learned what actually matters when moving here — and what I would skip, delay, or do much sooner if I were starting over today.

In this video, I walk through exactly how I would move to the Dominican Republic in 2027, from the first scouting trip to choosing where to live, building a realistic budget, opening a Dominican bank account, getting health insurance, renting vs. buying real estate, learning Spanish, finding healthcare, and building a real life in the DR.

The biggest lesson?

Don’t treat moving abroad like one giant irreversible decision.

Instead, make a series of smaller decisions that allow you to test the Dominican Republic, learn how you actually want to live here, and make bigger commitments only when you’re ready.

I’ve done all of this for the past 7 years. Would visit Dominican Republic 2-4 times a year (Working Remote for 2 weeks at a time) with my wife to visit her Aunts, Uncles, Nephews & Nieces. We would visit key spot areas/cities all over DR. We would predominantly stay in Bani, Salinas, DR via an Airbnb or relatives’ house. Early this year, after visiting various cities in DR, we decided to purchase a property in Boca Canasta, Bani, DR. Love it out there. They just built a highway for faster/easier access to drive to Santo Domingo & a $159MM Plan/model to upgrade La Playa de Almendros 5 minutes away from home! Excited about this Life Journey.

Great info Jamie! As someone who's become a bit of an adventurer in recent years, I think people should spend time in a place to see if they like it or would live there. I mean, I've traveled to Las Vegas several times, I could see myself living there. I've spent time in Rome, Italy recently and I could see myself living there.

Great information! Thanks for sharing. In your opinion, how easy/hard is it to break into a Dominican social circle to forge real friendships in terms of knowing Spanish and identifying with their culture? Do you feel most expats tend to stay in their bubbles or are many able to break into these social circles with other Dominicans?

One significant health risk living in the DR all of you ignored or never realized is that the water risk of getting Alzheimer's disease! Because we can't drink tap water in the DR all of us drink bottle water and this is where the problem started. According to recent study in the US and Canada, each plastic bottle releases millions of micro plastic particles into the water and they go to every part of your body especially the brain putting you at the risk of getting Alzheimer's disease! This is not a joke!

Hey my good friend I have lived in the DR for 7 years 1 in la Vega 3 in Santiago Rodriguez 3 in Monte Christe there is a budget for every one you can easaly live in the DR for 2 grand a month by the beach Inpat 12000 pzsos a month 3 bedroom 2 bath house with a 7 foot wall around it very safe its saber in the Cibao and cheaper light 2000 pasos water 1000 pasos internet 800 pasos I dont move to the Tourist side to expemsive plus you must live in a Mansión for that kind of money what ever flotas your bubble I love it hear so you are correct budget for how you want to live and have a remote job or just build a buisness I didnt make 400 a year but i did well for my self working for my self if you can build a buisness in the US and be Succesful same goes hear

Are buildings in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana being built earthquake resistant? Considering the last 2 earthquakes in Venezuela and Colombia this might be a good topic to discuss, perhaps even name builders who specifically build earth quake resistant buildings
