So!! Today I decided to take your advice.
After many of you suggested that a horse lorry might actually be the smartest way to move Bertie, the stand, and all the bits that come with show life, I headed up to County Armagh to check out some possibilities.
I landed in with Darren from DOH Equine solutions to have a look at some horse lorries and figure out if this is the genius solution… or a romantic notion that falls apart the minute you price diesel 😅
Thankfully, I didn’t go in blind.
I brought along my good friend Marty Mone a man who knows his way around both trucks and the show circuit, having spent years on the road himself. So while I was poking around asking the obvious questions, Marty was there to give the real-world perspective of someone who’s actually lived with one of these things.
Between Darren’s expertise and Marty’s experience, I got a proper education… and we had mighty craic along the way.
If you’ve ever wondered whether a horse lorry makes sense for show life — this one’s for you.

9 years ago I bought an old 88 Leyland roadrunner horse box and converted it to a campervan/RV. Still have it & live in it full time. Since then I've converted 5 others for folks. The most important lesson I've learnt is horse wee and Steele are mortal enemies and steel always looses the battle. Also horse boxes/truck's tend to live on muddy farms and the steel, especially underneath, loose that battle with the mud as well. The sides and bottoms of the ladder chassis can look okay and the top edges ( the bit that's hard to see ) is often utterly rotten. Also the top edges of the box floor cross members are often rotten.
A horse truck is a great idea for your needs, but have an independent health check on it first. I've yet to find a ten years or older horse box that's not had serious issues underneath.
Please consider this message as one from your new bestie, devoted fan, and a bloke who's been down this path and learnt a few too many hard lessons. X
But on a more serious note, doesnt these need some serious driving license? Or Ireland is different on such minor details 🤔 Maybe a Wolksvagen Crafter or something of that size would do? Trying not to imagine you getting anyone of these stuck in a muddy field as some agricultural shows might be held at such places..
