Tape to AI, Vinyl to Streaming: What's BEST & WHY?

Muddy Water HiFi Club

Is older always better, or has technology finally perfected music?
In this video, I go on a journey from the nostalgic warmth of physical analogue tape and vinyl record fairs to Spotify streaming and the mind-blowing frontier of AI-generated music.

We start with the tactile joy of playing an old cassette tape and digging through crates at a record fair with a portable record player. But when a family dinner turns into a Spotify-curated playlist at my daughter's request, it got me thinking about convenience versus quality; about analogue vs. digital.

And then, I stumbled onto the latest frontier: incredible music and video created by AI.

What is the YOUR favourite way to experience music today? What do you find the greatest way to enjoy it? And why?

Hi Neil, I do listen digital (tidal) and I didn’t run random playlists. I have my library with my albums and I only play these albums like playing a vinyl record. Simple as that. Your list about why analog I don’t understand….🤔
Kelly Boesch, or any AI music, I refuse because it has nothing to do with creating music.
You have a Ayrlic streamer…. did you buy it or was it loan to review?
Many German youtube influencer did their reviews of this Arylic streamer😂

I seem to be spending more time listening to an IPad . I have the small apple DAC so can carry it around the house and plug it in to any system.
On the subject of tubes It's best to swap them every now and then ive been told . Stops them going " airy "
Here's me saying that with a couple of spare tubes for my kriesler stereogram not used in over 10 years. One day .
All the best from the Wild West .😊

Vinyl's obvious weakness is also it's superpower. I'm on my phone now and once I've said hi to you lovely people I'll probably stream some music. I won't listen to a great album, I might put on a killer track but I'm already thinking about what to play next. With vinyl I'm listening to music whereas with any other format I'm merely hearing it. If I had the discipline to listen the way vinyl forces me to I might find digital is better. I seriously doubt it because it's not just me. Nobody listens to digital in that way.

Nice one, Neil and Jane. Very entertaining (we don’t get out much).
Keep doing what you’re doing.🙂

Kelly Boesch, what a talent and a complete assault on the senses, in a positive way, there is room for us all and digital V analogue is just another point of view, without the music any debate wouldn’t have legs.
Another enjoyable production from Mr & Mrs Whicker

Hi Neil this one proves that it's all about the music because it would seem that Laura and Hubby are like 99% of the population when I comes to having absolutely no criteria for how to position the record player and speakers. All that really matters is can we hear it. Unlike your setup that is totally reliant on correct speaker positioning for maximum quality of sound, theirs is about ambience and content. Just as it should be. The problem that you have with your cassette is called an uneven pack. Have you tried fast forwarding and rewinding the cassette a few times before attempting to play it? This is what I regularly used to do when I used a cassette player. Tape machines were notorious for overwinding tapes too tightly., especially with players like those in the car. If you do that a few times it should loosen up the tape .

Interesting video! And I enjoyed that brief live session clip at the end.

I remember when Paul McCartney "just" had £30M and was second to Michael Jackson. Not sure if he had 35M.

I use Roon and have a Qobuz account which links and play it at home via the Cambridge Audio CXN100 streamer I have and via my phone on Sony MR1 headphones when out using Cyrus soundKey, all from my Roon Nucleus at home. Happy as Larry!

Have you ever taken Jane to the land of the Mini Moke ... Portmeirion?
This was the filming location for The Prisoner with Patrick McGoohan, if you remember it?
Beautiful place to visit. 👍

Great to see you again Neil & Jane. The last record fair I went to was a bit overwhelming really. I was completely exhausted by the end. It looks like you took it easy though.. maybe I should try that next time. Are you planning to go to any more? As you know I'm an analogue chap on the whole. But having said that.. I totally love being able to stream an album before I buy it on vinyl.
Cheers - D
