pposition MPs of the INDIA bloc marched from Parliament’s Makar Dwar toward the Election Commission on 6 October 2026, demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Delhi Police halted the column on Parliament Street, in front of the NITI Aayog office, about 150–200 metres short of Nirvachan Sadan. Leaders sat on a dharna; by around 12:11 pm, buses carrying detained MPs, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were driven away after a face-off with police.
Rahul from Rooster News reports what happened on the ground.
More than 3,000 police were deployed in the New Delhi district, with RAF and CAPF units, detention buses and body cameras. Barricades went up around Parliament and the Election Commission from the morning. The Indian Youth Congress office was also barricaded. Traffic was diverted around Connaught Place, Patel Chowk–GPO, Windsor Place, Ashoka Road and Jantar Mantar Road. The march started from Makar Dwar around 11 am. Derek O’Brien and K.C. Venugopal were seen arguing with officers for permission to proceed. The column was stopped near NITI Aayog. Leaders sat on the road.
Rahul Gandhi posted on X: “Gyanesh, it’s done, bro. Time to resign.” The hashtag used was #IndiaAllianceMarch. Detention followed the sit-in.
Present across reports were Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Akhilesh Yadav, Supriya Sule, Abhishek Banerjee, Derek O’Brien, John Brittas, Arvind Sawant, Sanjay Raut, and other Congress, SP, TMC, NCP-SP, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Left MPs. BJD joined even though it says it is in neither the INDIA bloc nor the NDA. MP Sulata Deo cited Naveen Patnaik’s line that the party would speak for people in Odisha on the roll revision. AAP and DMK stayed out. AAP MP Sanjay Singh said the march was an INDIA alliance programme and AAP was not part of it, while claiming the party was fighting the issue separately.
MPs carried a “Save Democracy” / “Desh Bachao” banner and cutouts of Gyanesh Kumar in an RSS uniform. Slogans reported included “BJP hai CEC hai”, “Vote chor, gaddi chhod”, and “Democracy not for sale”. Rahul Gandhi was photographed climbing the barricades. Sanjay Raut questioned the force level: “We are MPs… We are also citizens of this country. Why is there a need to deploy such a large force to stop us? We will walk and go. We are unarmed.”
This Delhi march was fixed on 30 September, after a meeting of 33 leaders from 19 parties. Kapil Sibal also attended. The wider plan is district-level “Save Democracy” marches from 2 to 8 October, a move to the Supreme Court, and an appeal to the President. CPI(ML)’s Dipankar Bhattacharya proposed the district marches; Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi backed them after some resistance.
On Form 6, the voter-enrolment form, the bench directly contradicted the ECI’s 26 September press note. The Commission had said the extra declaration on Form 6 for SIR had been upheld by the Supreme Court. CJI Kant said: “Any modified Form 6 has not been approved by us. Let’s be clear. When the record is produced, we would like to see who has modified (it).” CPI MP P. Sandosh Kumar used that observation to call the 26 September ECI statement “entirely misleading.”
The Election Commission has rejected the claim of a split inside the three-member Commission and said SIR decisions were unanimous. The BJP and the Commission have previously dismissed the “vote theft” charge and defended the roll revision. Copies available today do not carry a fresh on-record ECI or BJP response to the detention itself.
