People have no idea how scary Rafa was on clay at this point in his career. Rafa in 2022 is still dominating Roland Garros even with his drastic decline in speed. That's just how good he is on clay. 2008 Rafa with his same shot making arsenal on clay combined with his godlike defence was unstoppable. There's only so much an attacking player like Federer could do here when he can't hit winners against Rafa and when he is being thrown on the defensive the whole time by Rafa's forehand.
I have been watching tennis since I was a kid. I've watched Wimbledon while in London, on TV. I've also watched the French Open, as a kid, while living in Grenoble. This is, easily, the biggest whopping of one of the greatest of all time by another of the greatest of all time.
Even if Federer had shown up with his best game he would've lost.
Everything that Nadal touched that day seemed to turn to gold. They even showed a replay of one of his few unforced errors in the first set, because I think he only made 3 in that set!
la plus grosse HUMILIATION de federer en finale d un grand schlem trop bonne regalade )))) petite apres midi d entrainement avec un sparrint pr RAFA VAMMMMOOOOSSSSSSS
I think this might have been the first time Federer ever stepped on court against Nadal without believing he could win. After 2005 a lot of us thought the gap between them would close, instead it just got wider and wider. In 2006 and 2007 I think Federer could still dream of maybe beating Nadal in Paris if everything fell in his favour, but 2008 destroyed that idea. Tough for us Federer fans to admit that, especially as we all knew that Nadal was going to get him at Wimbledon - which he sure enough did straight after this.
