As time played out... the heroines you mentioned Kimi Katkar, Meenakshi etc.. all left the industry. Rekha continued for years and years after this movie. Even playing character roles, that are hugely memorable.

The songs of Utsav were just hunting and mesmerizing

From this 1984 Utsav movie, Man Kyu Behka sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle is one of my most favourite songs of all time. I have listened to this song infinite times in my life and still love to listen to it again and again.

The film was also delayed because of Shashi Kapoors personal life as Jennifer was diagnosed with Cancer  and passed away during the making of this film.
Comedy of Shanker Nag, Annu Kapoor & Amjad khan was good. This was the first movie of Anupam kher the actor ( he plays Shashi Kapoors assistant in this movie). Shashi Kapoor put on weight for his character in the movie and never reduced after that. To cover the losses he signed every role that came his way including playing villian in a lot of movies like Meri Zabaan & Clerk.

1. First of all, the writer of this play, Sudraka, was traditionally described as a king. He wasn't just some ordinary writer. He was a king who wrote a play that was not merely humorous but deeply satirical and very much a critique of society. And that is exactly what makes Mṛcchakaṭika so fascinating. The film Utsav distorts so much from the original play that it completely disrespects the story and, most importantly, the characters, especially Vasantasena, who is such a generous, kind, intelligent, and genuinely beautiful character. It also completely mischaracterizes Charudatta, the Brahmin merchant. Vasantasena is not portrayed as a prostitute or a courtesan in the original play. She is a Ganika, a highly accomplished professional artist associated with the urban and courtly cultural. The film's portrayal reduces her into something much closer to a stereotypical prostitute and honestly calling her a courtesan doesn't make any single sense, Ganikas we're artists of the time, which is a huge distortion of her character and historical context. Ganikas could possess wealth, property, education, artistic accomplishments, and a degree of social and economic autonomy (basically just like queens, princesses, minister's wives and daughters, noble women etc). Vasantasena herself is wealthy and lives in a mansion with attendants. She is already known for her generosity and kindness. And then there's Charudatta, the kind but impoverished Brahmin merchant. His poverty exists precisely because of his own generosity, he gave away so much of his wealth to others that he eventually became poor himself. Yet the film completely changes his characterization. And honestly, I don't even understand why they cast such a young-looking man to play someone who is supposed to be a mature, experienced Brahmin merchant.

2. The love between Vasantasena and Charudatta in the original play is also genuinely beautiful. She falls in love with him because of his kindness, generosity, character, and personality, not simply because of physical attraction. And Vasantasena also develops a beautiful relationship with his family. She respects his first wife, Dhuta, and there is no cheap rivalry between the two women. But no, the film completely disrespects it, the entire relationship between the two is purely physical, it's not even love which is highly disrespectful to the actual play because there is no such implications of intimate scenes ever mentioned in the play. Besides that the film also disrespects Charudatta's wife, in the film her name is Aditi but in the original play her name is Dhuta, in fact she is herself portrayed as a woman of incredible wisdom and strength. She even gives her own jewelry to Vasantasena so that she can help clear her husband's debts. Vasantasena admires her tremendously and treats her almost like a sister. That is such an important part of the story that the film's treatment of these characters feels even more disappointing. And then we have the most important symbol in the entire play: the little clay cart. Charudatta is so poor that he doesn't have the money to buy good are expensive toys for his little son. The little boy only has a little clay cart to play with. When Vasantasena sees this poor child, she feels deeply sympathetic toward him and places her own jewelry inside the clay cart so that he can have something valuable to play with. That moment is incredibly important to the story and that is literally why the play is called The Little Clay Cart.

3. So when the director decided to call the film Utsav, I honestly don't understand it. The title itself loses one of the most important symbolic elements of the original play. And then the film randomly inserts Vatsyayana, the author associated with the Kama Sutra, which makes absolutely no sense because he is not a character in the original play at all. And the way the film portrays him is even worse. He's shown almost like some creepy voyeur who is watching intimate moments between Charudatta and Vasantasena. What the hell? The original Sanskrit play does not contain these kinds of gratuitous intimate scenes between them. A huge problem with Utsav is precisely how it adds unnecessary sexualization and forced intimacy that were not part of the original story. It also creates an unnecessary impression of infidelity and sexual melodrama when there is no such affair in the original play. And the film's portrayal of Vatsyayana writing the Kama Sutra is historically ridiculous too. It basically makes it look like he personally invented and wrote everything from scratch basically observing an intimate moment between the two. That's not what the Kama Sutra itself says. Vatsyayana presents himself as a compiler and synthesizer of earlier traditions and texts on Kama and related subjects. He wasn't simply sitting there inventing an entirely new sexual manual from nothing. But no, the film creates its own fictional story around him, and somehow this completely unrelated character becomes part of the plot.

4. And the story just keeps going without actually respecting the original play, its themes, or its characters. Most importantly, it completely fails to understand Vasantasena. At the end of the original story, Charudatta is falsely accused of murdering Vasantasena and is almost executed. But Vasantasena eventually appears in court alive and exposes what actually happened. She explains that the king's brother-in-law, Sakara (Saṁsthānaka), was responsible and had been pursuing her. Once the truth comes out, Sakara is punished, and eventually a new king comes to power who allows Vasantasena and Charudatta to marry. Vasantasena becomes his second wife, and the story ends happily. That is the actual story (the film's ending is even more ridiculous and very disrespectful, they didn't even let Vasantasena to be with Charudatta and he just leaves her). It is complex, satirical, socially critical, and surprisingly progressive in many ways. And just imagine, the work is written by a King. A king wrote a play that centered so heavily on urban society, class, poverty, corruption, women, politics, and social hypocrisy. That alone makes Mṛcchakaṭika incredibly fascinating. But Utsav completely distorts this beautiful story. It changes the characters, adds unnecessary sexualization, invents scenes, inserts Vatsyayana into the story, romanticizes things that weren't romanticized in the original, and completely misunderstands Vasantasena.

5. And honestly, the historical inaccuracies don't stop with the story. The depiction of the Gupta-era world, the women, the fashion, and especially the jewelry is also highly inaccurate in my opinion. Some of the silhouettes are inspired by historical clothing, sure, but inspiration is not the same thing as accuracy. And bro, that red antariya and uttariya that Rekha wears, why does she look like a bride? In so many scenes, she honestly looks more like a Queen mother than a Ganika in my personal opinion. The jewelry is ridiculously heavy and elaborate (and pretty anachronistic, in that time gold jewelry existed but alongside with pearls and many more but the film portrayed very typical South Indian style jewelry in a Gupta era which did not exist right back in the day), and she is constantly overdressed. A woman in her position wouldn't necessarily be wearing that level of heavy jewelry in every single scene. The entire fashion design feels highly stereotypical and romanticized rather than genuinely grounded in the period. Some elements are inspired by historical imagery, but the overall styling is nowhere near an accurate reconstruction of the period.

So yes, maybe the film had good music and beautiful visuals, but that doesn't automatically make it a good adaptation. I personally find Utsav highly inaccurate, whether we're talking about the characters, the story, the social context, the depiction of women, the Gupta-era setting, or the fashion. It had the potential to adapt one of the most fascinating Sanskrit plays ever written, but instead it turned it into a highly sexualized, melodramatic, historically inaccurate film. And honestly, just because it it had a big actors and looks beautiful doesn't mean it deserves to be called a great adaptation. (I know I have written it more like a paragraph so if anybody finds it lengthy it's okay)

Trust me the budget was indeed reduced by Girish Karnad with some sensible production if not the cost would have literally blown up 10 times if directed by another person

It is a movie I watched in cenema hall. Afterwards I kept searching for this movie in YouTube. Finally I found it with a different thumbnail recently. I was thrilled to watch it again. Sad that such efforts don't get awarded.

Nicely done! enjoyed the video with lots of interesting details and a likable way of narration. Small nit - you described the awesome music at the end but did not mention LP. Would have been nice to have them referenced along with the immortal songs

Hit plays on stage are hardly hit as a film. It's common.

Rekha's Utsav's photo shoots were divine.but the movie was a disappointment especially the script seemed  it was meant only for kids.
