He had the largest private yacht in the world. He owned an airline, a fleet of oil tankers, and his own Greek island. He married the widow of an American president. And yet, on the fifteenth of March, 1975, Aristotle Onassis died in a hospital bed in Paris as one of the loneliest men of the twentieth century.

How does a boy who escaped a burning city with a few gold coins sewn into his coat lining become one of the richest men on earth? And how does that same man end his life having buried his only son, lost the woman he truly loved, and driven away almost everyone who once cared about him?

In this long-form documentary, we walk through the entire life of Aristotle Onassis. The escape from Smyrna in 1922. The lonely years in Buenos Aires. The first ships bought for almost nothing during the Great Depression. The wartime fortune. The famous yacht Christina. The great love affair with Maria Callas. The shocking marriage to Jacqueline Kennedy in 1968. The plane crash that killed his son Alexander in 1973. And the slow, painful decline of a man who, in the end, could not save himself.

We also address, honestly and carefully, the many rumors and conspiracy theories that have surrounded his name for half a century, and we explain which ones the serious historical record supports and which ones it does not.

A NOTE ON OUR METHOD

This video is based on a careful review of multiple published biographies, memoirs, interviews, and journalistic accounts. Where sources disagree, we say so on screen. Our goal is to separate the popular myths from what the documented record actually supports, so that you, the viewer, can form your own opinion on the questions that remain contested.

Some of the dialogue and inner scenes in this video have been gently reconstructed for narrative purposes, based on the recollections of witnesses, published interviews, letters, and biographical accounts. These reconstructed moments are used to bring documented events to life. They are not presented as verbatim transcripts.

We invite you to share your own view in the comments. Did Onassis love Maria Callas, or only use her? Was Jacqueline Kennedy a victim of that marriage, or a full partner in it? What do you believe truly caused the crash that killed Alexander? We read every comment and we love hearing from you.
