James Webb Finally Saw Titan — And Something Is Not Right

James Webb Space Telescope has given scientists an extraordinary infrared look at Titan, Saturn’s largest moon and one of the most unusual worlds in our Solar System.

NASA’s Webb observations revealed methane clouds at different altitudes in Titan’s northern hemisphere and provided evidence of cloud convection—the first time this behavior had been observed in the northern region containing many of Titan’s methane lakes and seas.

Even more importantly, Webb detected the methyl radical (CH₃) on Titan for the first time. This short-lived molecule forms when methane is broken apart by sunlight or energetic particles, helping researchers understand how Titan produces more complex hydrocarbons such as ethane.

In this video, we explore what James Webb actually saw, why Titan’s methane weather is so unusual, and what its atmospheric chemistry could reveal about this fascinating moon.
