The Book of Enoch says the dead are not in one place. In chapter 22 an angel shows Enoch a mountain in the west with four hollow places cut into it, and tells him who waits in each: the righteous by a bright spring, the murdered with their complaint still open, the wicked who died unpunished, and the wicked who did not. The Hebrew Bible before it never sorts the dead at all.
This episode reads the chapter line by line from R. H. Charles's 1912 translation, sets it beside what the Old Testament actually says about Sheol, and then goes to the ground: the rock-cut family tombs and limestone bone boxes the people who read this book were cutting for their own dead in Jerusalem, the Caiaphas tomb opened by a bulldozer in 1990, the Aramaic scrap of this very chapter from the caves at Qumran, Josephus on what the Pharisees and Essenes believed, and the parable of Lazarus and the rich man. It ends where it starts: with the Greek copy of this chapter, found in 1886 lying in a monk's grave in the desert at Akhmim.
