Not everything at the dollar store is a bargain, friend. Some things save you money for years. Others look cheap until you have to buy them twice. And with Thanksgiving and Christmas coming, that little mistake gets expensive fast. After years of shopping these aisles, I have learned which ten things belong in my basket and which five shelves I walk right past.

THE 10 THINGS I ALWAYS BUY, COUNTING DOWN:
10. Glass jars: Store rice, beans, oats, and flour. Buy early for Christmas gifts.
9. Greeting cards & gift bags: The message matters more than the price. Save the bags for next year.
8. Foil pans: Perfect for Thanksgiving roasting and taking meals to neighbors.
7. Spray bottles & cleaning tools: Refill instead of buying expensive cleaners again and again.
6. Baskets & storage bins: Organize cupboards, winter gloves, and leftovers before they spoil.
5. Plain party supplies: White plates, napkins, and tablecloths work for every holiday.
4. Bread: Check the date, then freeze it for later. My one exception in the food aisle.
3. Office supplies: Tape, envelopes, poster board, and glue before the Christmas rush.
2. Reading glasses: Keep an extra pair wherever you need one.
1. Tall glass candles: Simple, inexpensive winter lighting. Always use them safely.

THE 5 THINGS I NEVER BUY:
5. Heavy-duty batteries: Look for alkaline instead.
4. Cheap extension cords & power strips: Electrical safety is worth paying for.
3. Cheap knives & can openers: Weak steel and broken gears cost more in the long run.
2. Small rolls of foil, plastic wrap & paper goods: Check the price per foot or sheet.
1. Tiny pantry packages: Rice, beans, cereal, and detergent can cost far more per ounce.

My mother's rule was simple: "When the price stands still, buy what you can see, and leave what you have to measure."
