I’m still pissed off about that assault by Pickford. Virgil has done remarkably well to regain his powers but it cost him nearly a full season out injured and then more than a season after that to get back to his best. Without the hindsight, I’d seen enough of him at Celtic to have bought him back then.

What about Troy Deeney’s quote “I've said it many times, I hate him, I hate going up against him. He's too big, too strong, too quick, too good on the ball, loves fighting, a good head of hair. One of those guys that sprays on his top as well, so he smells lovely”

If we’re talking about the best defender of all time, it’s between VVD and Maldini, surely

It is cringe watching Ferdinand patronising VVD when peak VVD surpasses Ferdinand by a significant margin.

For me VVD is probably best all time defender ever , from a neutral point of view , just because how fast and his positioning and timimg is unreal

Poor Rio has to eat humble pie in the face of a much greater player than he ever was. Sweet. 😂

What extraordinary with VVD, he's not just defending monster. He can create a long key pass to the front and create chances.

Sad thing about Virgil van Dijk as a centre back is we haven’t got to see how his career as a striker would have gone. Convinced he’d be 15-20 a season

People like to talk him down, but being a defender in this time of age is in my opinion harder then ever. The amount of games a year and the tempo that went way up changed a lot. One of the best defenders ever.

It's funny. When Gakpo is talking English I can hear that he's born in the same Dutch city that I was born. Eindhoven. Our southern accent is even noticeable in his pronunciation of English. 🙂

Actually I’m so happy that now finally Dutch team members are increasing in the Liverpool squad. I support Holland since Gullit days and Milan and jealous when ManU have some of the best Dutch players playing for them. Hopefully we are reaping the rewards from post Klopp era, YNWA

He is the best because he isn't rough and vindictive. Most defenders i have watched just play rough and dangerously. Van dijk is very polished yet very effective as a defender

In a team with a long list of outstanding defenders Virgil is just the greatest. Give him what he wants to keep him a red.

I have always thought that part of being an exceptional player is also the the quality of being a great human being. Great communication with his teammates comes natural to him. He truly cares about them while always being humble and modest himself.
