Glad you found Lindau -my wife and I have been spending a month based in this town every year for the last 10 years. You are right, the town is popular with all ages but there is a plus; if you stay in a hotel on the north shore of the Bodensee (other than Reutin), you pay a Kurtax of €3.30 per person per night BUT it includes free transport (both bus and train) in the area from the Austrian border to Meersburg and a considerable distance inland. Bregenz is the capital of the Voralberg Region of Austria (hence the feeling of culture) and the Bodensee Freizeit Kart (rough cost €21 per day) will give you free bus and train travel in the region as far as Feldkirch and the Swiss border (but it does not include Liemobile bus services from Feldkirch Bf to Liechtenstein) plus entry to a lot of museums and attractions (like a trip on the Pfanderbahn cable car in Bregenz or the Karrenbahn cable car in Feldkirch).

I am a local to Bregenz. The opera will be continued inside in case of (heavy) rain. These tickets a bit higher in price because not all 700 spectators outside will fit inside the house.

I worked on the island in 1999. It was magic, but it starts to turn cold and the tourists have all cleared out by September. I've always wanted to go back for a visit, but it's not a cheap place to stay.

Nice to see those places again. I was there much as bus tour guide in the 80s. And yes Lindau is definitely the most charming place of them. I stayed both in Lindauer Hof and Baeren in Feldkirch, which does NOT mean Baron a the AI text suggest but bear! And Loewe is lion.

I studied in Bregenz, and there is much more to see and do, but I understand your time is budgeted. I have been through Feldkirch several times, but I have spent many days in Lindau also. By the way, all the regional trains which go to Bregenz from Lindau Reutin begin in Lindau Insel. You could spared yourself the walk and boarded your train on the island.

Lindau in particular is a beautiful town. Sadly the station at Reutin was opened and trains were rerouted and also increased in frequency between München Hbf and Zürich Hbf afterwards. The old Lindau Hbf became Lindau Insel station with long distance trains removed. It is / was a gem to visit and also Bregenz and Feldkirch are really great towns. Well done Scott for highlighting a really gorgeous part of the world.
