In 1912, Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his team met a tragic end in the frozen wilderness of Antarctica. Over 100 years later, modern explorers re-examine the evidence left behind in the ice. Was Scott’s downfall the result of extreme weather, or did missing rations and altered orders doom the expedition? Explore the grueling history of polar exploration, from the Heroic Age of Shackleton and Amundsen to modern solo expeditions pushing the limits of human endurance in the coldest place on Earth.

Amundsen was a genius polar explorer! He anticipated every possible condition on his bid for the South pole and deservedly was the first to claim it.

I have read every book on the Scott expeditions, including the one by Edward Wilson. Those men faced incredibly difficult and harrowing conditions the entire time they were on the ice. Scott made some very unwise decisions in his rush to be the first to the pole, but I think his outfitting and supplies were not underestimated. I always wondered why they had such a hard time getting back despite having abundant caches of food and supplies, and now this revelation about Evans' possible supply sabotage. If indeed true, which I suspect it is based on how vengeful cheated men can be, it is one of the most disgusting travesties in the history of polar exploration. And I have always been angry about Edward Wilson losing his life over this folly. Wilson was a gifted biologist, ornithologist, and nature artist and his loss was beyond tragic.

What do we make of Scott and his men? Roland Huntford was brutal on him in "Scott and Amundsen" and rightfully points out the Norwegians vastly superior preparation and planning. I don't believe Scott was a fool and certainly no coward. He was the prisoner of a polar exploration tradition that he simply could not escape. The Brits had done amazing things in the Arctic and Antarctica using the same techniques as those used by Scott. It just wasn't enough. His key errors were in not extending his supply caches far enough up the Beardmore Glacier and in adding P..O Evans to the assault team at the last minute thus unbalancing his supplies. Bad moves for which he paid.
