I sparred yet another judo black belt, Anakin Mendoza, on my quest to finally beat one! But this time, I have a trick up my sleeve that might actually help me throw him...

Thanks Anakin, Caro Lazari, Soren Ogden, and Hongwanji Judo Club in Pearl City, Hawaii!

"build your own judo"
I studied silat when I was young and my guru also said something similar. Basically, teachers can teach you methods, techniques, and drills, but in the end the students have to absorb and adjust them to grow our own skills, build our own "style" internally.

It took me 7 years to throw a black belt in my judo club lol and I had 30 pounds on him

1:43 he is leaving stuff out. that gi he is wearing is San Jose State. One of, if not the, top university for judo. Works closing with San Jose Buddhist and Mike Swan.

And almost all of Anakin's judo goes out out through the window when he has no gi to grab, even when the rulest favors him.

One of my favorite things is getting experts in a field to spar with me under similar but different rules. see what works from their game and what they can come up with intuitively. Get a Muay Thai coach to do mma clinch fighting or wall clinching. This was awesome

Man the Hawaiian man's tai otoshi was so powerful he even flipped himself. And still landed on top. Judo truly is a thing of beauty

As a lower belt, every time I would spar with a black belt, if I managed to do a move successfully on them, it would never happen again😂. It’s like they would realize they shouldn’t let their guard down so much and your chances would disappear.
