I retired at 64 and I’m so happy I did. I worked asa nurse for 35 years in Florida. I met my husband on line and I moved to Ohio. He said I didn’t have to go back to work ever.

So many newer nurses are dropping like flies. I've had so many co-workers who have been nurses for less than 5 years are quitting. Some of the new grads don't even last a month.

im also a nurse and once, i asked a computer scientist what the best and worst parts of his job are. tbh, i forget what we said for the best parts of our jobs...but i remember he said
"the worst part is i get so focused in the computer, it sometimes feels like i get sucked out of life"
then he asked me about nursing and i remember saying
"thats funny bc i actually feel like theres so much life in nursing....but it sometimes feels like life gets sucked out of *me*"

i feel you on how hard it is to explain what the lows of nursing feel like. thankfully, i never experienced a high enough number of lows to ever tempt me away from the field of nursing as a whole. just enough lows to simply teach me that certain specialties are not my flavor, which turned out to be pivotal in pointing me towards my most recent jobs which ive genuinely loved.

but if i had stayed in my very first job forever... i mean there were days i vividly thought "nothing at all whether its money, gratitude, or meaning is worth what we have to go through"
there were days i was so overstimulated, worked to the bone, or in grief of watching patients slowly die week after week, seeing the life leave their eyes..... that i would crumple and cry on the way home or as soon as i hit my partners arms. then have to sleep early + wake up early the next day to do it all over again.

the human body/heart/mind can only take so much. im glad that you are listening to yourself and taking the step away before its too late, before we push ourselves into actual physical or mental health emergencies.

tbh, after my first few yrs as a nurse, i thought i lost all interest in one day trying icu nursing. i was just DONE with bedside nursing as a whole. but taking a step away ironically healed me enough to want to return to bedside. i did not expect it to and i did not need it to, but it was a good lesson for me that regardless of what i ended up picking next, making sure we listen to ourselves and take breaks is SO important.

im not worried about you. im not worried for anyone like you who has healthy sense of boundaries and courage to leave what they are clear headed enough to realize is unhealthy, toxic, and dare i say abusive. im most worried for people who take whatever they can get and park themselves in abusive relationships or abusive work environments and stick with it thinking things wont be better elsewhere.

I was a nurse for 15yrs and decided to leave. I loved it too but there was a lot of anxiety and depression that came with it for me. I also worked in mental health, a mens lock down unit. I got beat up a lot. A lot of things were not safe for us on the unit. We would get patients from the surrounding jails/prisons. There is so much that nursing school doesn't tell you, doesn't prepare you for. I've now been out of nursing for 7 years and I dont regret it a bit. Another thing I didnt realize is how bad the benefits are for nursing, so expensive as well. I make more money where I am now, better and cheaper benefits. I even get to see my family for holidays now. I hope you love this new chapter!❤

Well I am in my 3rd year of nursing school and i can say I feel burnt out already lol I'm not sure how much years I'll be in Nursing for but thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I graduated in 1991 . I always said it’s not the job it’s the conditions. I loved it and stayed tho 😅

An ex got driven into a deep depression over hospital nursing. It is not for everyone. I encouraged her to quit, She is a personal trainer now and extremely happy.

You made the right decision. I retired 19 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did and I was able to travel all over the world.

All the things you said about nursing were spot on. Myself and many of my friends burned out hard during covid. I went back and got my NP and have been doing that in the ICU for a few years. Totally changed the physical/mental burden, but still get all the good stuff. I hope you have a happy retirement!

So much love to nurses. After having a femur fractured surgery at 23 I had the best experience with the best nurse and legit didn’t want to leave the hospital because the care I received was phenomenal! Egregious that so many excellent nurses aren’t taken care of with the level of love and care they provide to their patients.

I wish nurses understood that we literally have so many options! We can leave the bedside and do something not as stressful and still be a nurse
