But with that definition, I’m on board.
What confuses me is this part: not necessarily abolishing masculinity/femininity. For example, baking—'it’s not the content (baking?), it’s the differential enforcement by sex'. Yes, so we don’t want to eliminate baking. But surely we do want to eliminate it being considered “feminine,” since that implies it is “for women” or suited to a “woman’s nature.”.. Which is socially constructed. Right?
Or is it that in a post–gender abolition world, “feminine” would be for everyone? Which is what the gays have been saying (and doing) all along!.. Sounds more 'queering' gender, than abolition. In abolition, why keep the concepts of feminine/masculine for activities, jobs, or roles at all? These theories are so abstract, I’m struggling to imagine the gender abolition utopia.", "commentTextType" : 1, "uploaderName" : "@sallymclean8478", "uploaderAvatars" : [ ], "uploaderUrl" : "https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTISgRWw-r0Sm-JETsE8xBg", "uploaderVerified" : false, "textualUploadDate" : "1 year ago", "uploadDate" : { "approximation" : true }, "likeCount" : 2, "textualLikeCount" : "2", "heartedByUploader" : false, "pinned" : false, "streamPosition" : -1, "replyCount" : 3, "replies" : { "url" : "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZUbKFcs7Dw", "id" : "Eg0SC3ZaVWJLRmNzN0R3GAYygwEaUBIaVWd5WmZIQU40cEFYaUY1eEZBbDRBYUFCQWciAggAKhhVQ2s3TkdsdzhrY0szRW5XaGNzZEdWalEyC3ZaVWJLRmNzN0R3QAFICoIBAggCQi9jb21tZW50LXJlcGxpZXMtaXRlbS1VZ3laZkhBTjRwQVhpRjV4RkFsNEFhQUJBZw%3D%3D" }, "channelOwner" : false }, { "infoType" : "COMMENT", "serviceId" : 0, "url" : "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZUbKFcs7Dw", "name" : "@amandawaller3479", "thumbnails" : [ ], "commentId" : "UgxjxTfqqqJuRUuo0qp4AaABAg", "commentText" : "Have you heard of difference feminism? following on from the stream earlier, I thought I'd provide a few more details about\r
the JRR writings I mentioned in addition to 'The Sceptical Feminist' (which btw I have only read in the 1st edition back in 1982... and then again within the last few years, as I was desperate to re-acquaint
myself with what clarity of rational argument looked like...)\r
\r
Insofar as the whole Evolutionary Psychology business ends up encroaching into everything these days, I'd recommend her
'Human Nature After Darwin - a Philosophical Introduction' (Routledge, first published 2000) as a good overview and disentangling of the conceptual mess that is made of the area.\r
\r
Also:
'Why Feminist Epistemology Isn't' - \r
I don't know if this was originally a Journal Paper (as a professional academic, you will be much better qualified to ascertain this than I!), but it is a chapter, Pages 385 to 412, in a book called 'The Flight From Science And Reason' - Volume 775 of 'The Annals Of The New York Academy Of Sciences', published in 1996\r
(JRR was also in there fighting during the 'Science Wars' of the 90's - another reason I adore her work...)\r
\r
'Traditionalist Spheres And Traditional Logic' - again, perhaps a journal paper? - but in my possession as Chapter 23 of 'Empirical Logic And Public Debate - Essays In honour Of Else M. Barth', published in 1993 as Volume 35 of the 'Poznan Studies In The Philosophy Of The Sciences And The Humanities'\r
(I think this piece was incorporated in to the 2nd Ed. (1994?) of The Sceptical Feminist)\r
\r
\r
Not specifically a feminist issue (i think - though issues of bodily autonomy are also involved), but JRR also addressed issues of medical ethics as part of her work as a Research Fellow in Practical ethics - specifically Transplantation of Organs, and she wrote 'Careless Thought Costs Lives' (2012) about the ethical complexities of the practice. (Which, now that I think of it, seems to have gone quiet...)\r
\r
Thank you for the Haack reference: I enjoyed one of her lectures on YT today (love her laid-back and deadpan style of delivery!) - and have several more playlisted for later. I also discovered that she is not only referenced a good many times in several of my books, but that 3 or 4 of her pieces\r
are included in a few of my far-too-many ('SABLE'*) and still-to-read volumes !
