ow do you build a practical Desert Recce kit? In this video, we break down a complete desert recce/survival loadout designed around observation, mobility, sustainment, and operating in harsh desert environments. We cover what belongs on your body, chest rig, and pack, discussing navigation, optics, camouflage, hydration, communications, medical gear, shelter, clothing systems, and the reasoning behind every item.
This is a principles-based discussion focused on planning and equipment selection for remote desert travel and observation. Whether you’re interested in fieldcraft, wilderness travel, preparedness, or military-inspired gear, this video explains how to balance weight, capability, and sustainment while operating for extended periods in hot, arid terrain.

Proud of my Idahoan brother
1) Everything strategic in the desert is probably on the river or other water source. So your desert Recce is likely an urban one.
1b) In that case your best camoflauge is actually to look like you aren't wearing camo. If you aren't working for a member of the Hague Convention against a member of the Hague Convention there is no upside to looking like you are.
2) E-tools - Sand collapses, rocks throw sparks that can be seen for miles and that steel could have been water.
3) More water... and batteries. Desert conditions kill batteries faster as well. *Lithium hold up better than alkaline. Expect shortened use still.
3c) Camelbacks are life. Keep a get-away amount on your body. You might have to leave your pack behind in a hurry.
3d) Pack a water filter. See line 1; Your objective is probably located on a river and water is the worst possible thing to pack in large quantities. You will usually need more than you can carry.
