The big hook is a Cod Jig. I used one very similar in Newfoundland.  You only have it attached to a line, throw the line and Jig over the edge  of your rowboat,  let it drag the bottom whilst pulling it up and down.  It snags the poor unsuspecting fish through its body, you drag it aboard,  and take it and others home for a marvelous dinner 😊

Nicola you can’t even imagine how impotent you’ve been to me.    While my husband was dying from pancreatic cancer he just seemed to hold on every day waiting for your next video.   He so much loved all the research you do and so much wanted to get to go to the uk where his family came from.    I think your videos kept him alive for an additional few weeks.   ❤❤ ❤

My brother has got a Roman Viila under his land when they were excavating it they found a clay pantile with squirrel footprints across it - 2000 year old squirrel footprints blows yer mind!

The peaceful and gentle pace of these videos is perfect. The only equivalent in my world is going to yard sales and swap meets and Goodwill stores searching for things to use in my artwork.

I once visited the Danish Viking ships museum where they showed how they preserved the wood reclaimed from the mud by soaking it in wax infused water allowing it to not dry out and crack.

The metal objects by the old boot you found are (quite big) unused rivets. They get dropped because they have be handled with tongs when red-hot; one man holds the hot rivet in the hole and his mate hammers it to shape from the other side.
It's not just ships that were riveted: the Empire State Building in NYC had all-riveted ironwork. When it was being built, a riveting crew dropped a red-hot rivet from hundreds of feet up and it was seen to bury itself in the wooden roof of a passing bus. In the absence of modern telecommunications, the riveters could only watch helplessly as the bus drove into the distance with a steadily-developing fire on the roof!

My grandfather worked in the woods in Pennsylvania.  Lumberjacks rolled logs on the Susquehanna River with peaveys—that look like boat hooks.

That ANY glass object survived next to that heavy chain, is miraculous. Don't you think?  Wonderful find. So glad you have these two treasures. Nice pipes too.

The bottom of the onion bottle which is now your bath candle holder I think would make a FABULOUS fish eye for a mighty big fish.

Lignum Vitae is a very special
wood that is now endangered. It was used for many things that required a tough, dense, hard wearing, self lubricating, rot resistant wood. It is also beautiful when carved.

I think the interior seen through the broken onion bottle is just as lovely as the exterior.

Onion Bottles!! .... gigglesnortgiggles ... it took me QUITE a while, watching your videos, to understand that people didn't actually put the onions IN the bottles .. ahem, yes, I thought that's what they were for - pickled onions, maybe? .. made into a sauce? .. okay, I am older and wiser now. lol

I was in London a couple weeks ago, while taking a boat ride down the Thames, I couldn’t help but want to walk along the shore and look for stuff. What a fantastic place, just amazing !
