Imagine if you found somebody who had literally never heard a Beatles song before, but knew of the Beatles' reputation as the most massively successful and influential pop group in history, and then somebody played "You know my name, look up the number" as their very first introduction to the band's music. My God, they would be so confused.

"Eleanor Rigby" - "very happy, upbeat"

Bro is going to have an interesting life 😂

John Lennon was amazed to find teenagers in the 1970s were still listening to the Beatles

I never thought anyone could hear Eleanor Rigby as a "happy" song.

In 1983, I moved to California. I overheard a young girlfriend of my husband's niece saying, "have you heard the great new band? They're called The Beatles. Dude, you've got to hear them." I never laughed so hard in my life.

0:40 - "Today, as the number of first-generation Beatles fans dwindles..." Hey! I'm a first-generation Beatles fan, and I have no intention of dwindling any time soon!

I was the Beatles generation born in 1952. It’s hard to describe the excitement, the Beatles created with the youth of our nation. Their music was completely different than any music we had ever heard before. They had discovered a completely new and unique sound, and their sound caused hysteria with the youth. I had every song they recorded.. we had Beatles pictures on everything, even our wallpaper in our bedrooms with the Beatles. Teenagers had radios on every waking moment & every week there was a new hit Beatles song playing. And then they appeared on the Ed Sullivan show and that was it. My entire youth was affected by Beatles music. To this day when I hear their songs, I feel like I’m floating in the air. I love the Beatles.

Imagine being so legendary that every B side is an absolute banger in it's own right.

Had to smile at the Eleanor Rigby upbeat comment weird how people perceive things so differently

This video made me realize that the pleasure I take in listening to Beatles songs is all tied up with knowing where the songs land in the group's evolution from a skiffle-influenced cover band to the pioneers they became. Out of context, so many of the songs seem trivial. But if you've listened to the previous and next albums, you quickly see what is new and inventive, what experiments are being conducted and how the young men are growing ever more sure of themselves and their artistic vision.

The kid who picked You Know My Name cracked me up! He should've gotten a second song, though ... ☺☺

I'm so glad Amanda told me where she was from because I'd never have guessed 😉

The girl at the end absolutely nailed it when she said, "the kids of today will be telling their kids about them." Reminded me of the comment Derek Taylor put in his liner notes on Beatles For Sale. "The kids of 2000ad will be listening to The Beatles. "

It's bizarre how most of them can recall John Lennon's name - a guy who's been gone for quite a while - but only one of them could name Paul McCartney who's still very active and whose music and talent is just as impressive.
It's interesting that this is another example of the younger generation reacting to classic rock or other classic popular music and thinking that because it has an upbeat tempo, it's a happy song, when nine times out of ten the message is usually sad or poignant. Eleanor Rigby, for instance, is not happy.

i'm 15, i'm an absolute Beatles die hard, and have learned how to play most of their songs on my guitar

@badbob6689 1 year ago

I had to laugh when someone said "this is not their usual sound". They never had a single sound and each member of the band wrote songs differently and the song writing evolved thru the years.

I am a retired music teacher. The students here seemed honest but open minded about other kinds of music. They are highly intelligent and express themselves that way. I got a big kick out of the young man who listened to You Know My Name Look Up the Number...I could tell by the smirk on his face he was laughing inside but his description was dead on and without saying so, that this was a take off on lounge singers and bar bands. I got news for him...the Beatles really liked recording this song because it was so fun to just mess around and create something goofy....you should do MORE of this kind of interview. The American girl made me laugh also, being American myself, because she made it sound like "I really love this song, but don't tell anybody, just play it in the background...."
