Discover the complete history of Iran, from the rise of ancient Persia to the modern Islamic Republic.

This documentary explores more than 3,000 years of Iranian history—beginning with Elam, Cyrus the Great, Darius I and the powerful Achaemenid Empire, before moving through Alexander’s conquest, the Parthians, the Sasanian Empire, the Arab Muslim conquest, the Persian cultural revival, the Mongol invasions, the Safavid transformation of Iran into a major Twelver Shia state, and the rise of the Qajar and Pahlavi dynasties.

We also explore some of the most important turning points in modern Iranian history: the discovery of oil, British and Russian influence, the Constitutional Revolution, Reza Shah’s modernization, Mohammad Mossadegh and the nationalization of Iran’s oil industry, the 1953 coup, the rule of Mohammad Reza Shah, the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini, the Iran-Iraq War, Iran’s nuclear program, and the political and social struggles that continue to shape the country today.

Iran has been conquered, invaded and transformed many times—but Persian language, culture and identity repeatedly survived and reinvented themselves.

This is not only the history of a modern country. It is the story of one of the world’s oldest continuous civilizations.

Watch the full documentary to understand how ancient Persia became modern Iran—and why its history still plays such an important role in Middle Eastern and global politics.
