Love the 1000-yard stare of sadness and disgust at 3:49 when you said it's almost 500 pages! Great job Jim getting through the book!

For me finishing a GBWW book feels like a real accomplishment. Even if I've read the same book from another publisher. It just feels different to me. Like a true intellectual achievement

Thank you for the video! I now feel I know everything I need to know about The City of God.

Thank you for the overview. I am on my second year reading through the GBWW in order. I am reading the 1990 set and just finished volume 13 Plutarch and started volume 14 Tacitus on Saturday.

I am very encouraged by your videos and knowing there are others as passionate about these works as I am. Keep up the great work.

One thing I noticed as I continued my studies past Christianity is that Augustine deliberately misrepresented the pagan philosophers when he criticized the "Letter to Anebo" and ignored the "Reply of Ab-Ammon". The two pseudepigraphical letters are meant to be a question and answer, the Letter to Anebo was deliberately written to demonstrate the modern Greek ignorance and the Reply was meant to show the ancient Egyptian wisdom.

Thanks for this

What an accomplishment! Eventually I will have to tackle this beast. Which translation did you read? I wish I could read it in its original form, along with all the other great books, but alas, I can only read English and a little Spanish.

I heard some excerpts from City of God on a podcast fairly recently and it sounded like St. Augustine used a lot of beautiful language to trick the reader into believing he knew what he was talking about. He’s just speculating, so he couldn’t possibly know. It’s like pretty privilege for literature. I don’t know how much of that I could take. Again, hats off to you.

Nice yellow T-shirt you look good in yellow

I wish I had as wild imagination as his 😂

If you’re still interested in the church fathers, the cappadocian fathers, or Saint John of Damascus would be a good place to dive into
