Harry of Art Gear Guide  tested and liked them very much and did a beautiful kingfisher drawing with them in September. He favorably compared them to Caran d'Ache and recommended them for those who are not selling original art because of their lack of lightfast testing. Am I the only one to check out the we sight. Gold Horse brand has been around since 1967. And they do have a professional set also. I would like to see Sara's thoughts on the professional set from gold horse.

I was lucky enough to get the 120 set of Polychromos and Albrecht Durer as a gift, quite early on in my coloring journey (10 years ago). Since then I've bought and used most of the top brands like Prismacolor, Luminance, Lightfast, Inktense etc. I have also tried the value brands like Arteza, Castle Arts, Kalour, and so on. I've sold most of my sets and only keep Crayola as a budget brand.

The thing about these chinese brands is that they are not comparable to the artist quality ones in any way, esp in the pigment load and the way they lay down on paper. However I do find they are useful in very specific circumstances. One, to entertain kids and niblings when they want to color with you. Two, when you're starting out and don't know if you'll keep coloring or drawing as a hobby and don't want to invest like $200 in one set! Three, if you travel a lot and like to color on the go. And finally, if you don't have the budget to buy a nice artist set, there's no reason you cannot enjoy coloring as a hobby with just budget brands.

I'd rather save up and buy 1 set of artist pencils instead of 5 budget brands. In the end, it works out the same price and the coloring experience is much better. Plus you can get them open stock and I'm never buying any sort of art supply that I cannot get singles of.

If you're worried about using up your fancy new pencils, consider this: I've colored more than 500 pages over the last 10 years (I know I'm very slow!) but I have yet to replace a single pencil! I use colored pencils, water soluble pencils, alcohol markers, gel pens, acrylic markers in my books. Unless you color with ONLY pencils ALL the time like some youtubers (Karen from colourful country life)  you'll be coloring with the same set for a loooong time. Long enough that you can easily replace the entire set again or buy open stock instead of wasting money on cheaper sets.

I'm glad you have over 4000 pencils. It makes my 1000+ seem reasonable 😂

I find having someone who is trying out new pencil, pens etc that come on to the market to old faithful brand. Which help when looking for art stuff within your budget thank you.

I would  like to say something here about knock offs. But what I’m saying is not so much in defence of the knock offs but just how effective lightfastness is.
I have to say that Ive had coloured pencil work done a very long time ago (20 years) and the prismas were not lightfast st the time. Well to my surprise when I pulled the framed piece apart and took the artwork out from behind  of the glass the pigment   had not faded not even a bit and that had happened quite a bit. But the other stuff that was supposed to be lightfast/acid free had faded/changed colour. So go figure. One of the rules  I have is to never hang anything direct sunlight.

I’ve been under the impression for many many years that manufacturing companies have at the end of a stock run the product that they can sell at the premium price point and then the product that comes off the belts at the start and end of the production cycle that they can only sell at a lower price point under another name. This is called umbrella companies which are widely known in the food chain markets but not so widely known in the clothing, toy and other markets which most likely include art supplies manufacturers such as Derwent or Caran D’ache etc.

It is very nice to see other artists and content creators supporting each other!

I bought these pencils and they are amazing to colour with, they lay down so creamy and are very vibrant. I did a test to see how well they went in window light and they are not all lightfast. Some of the oranges pinks and mauves have faded after a few weeks, some of the darker colours are still good. However for colouring books they would be excellent. I have the Tenwin electric sharpener and they sharpen beautifully and have had no breaks or issues. The build of the pencil is excellent and the packaging is also wonderful. My only issue is they are not open stock, so enjoy them while they last. I own a set of Luminance and they feel similar as they lay down.

OMG….!!!  It was fate that I watched this video!!! I have the Dahle pencil sharpener as well… as recommended by you in one of your older videos where you had purchased a TON of pencil sharpeners to compare.  At any rate, the tip of a Prismacolor pencil broke off & after that, it refused to work again. I didn’t realize that I could remove the crank to tap it out! (The booklet for it is somewhere in its box inside another box out in my garage.)  At any rate, I was seconds away from hitting that “confirm your purchase” button on Amazon to buy a new one… so I immediately grabbed my sharpener & did what you did & TA-DAH….! It fixed it!!!!!  So THANK YOU!!!!  😊❤  I have learned so much from you in all of your previous videos from when I first began my adult coloring obsession… er… (cough) I mean “journey” about 4.5 years ago.  😁 So once again… THANK YOU!  😊🥰

Bruynzeel (a Dutch brand) packages their watercolor pencils in foam trays, in cardboard drawers.

The colouring chemist might be able to help you out with scientific stuff 🤔 I’m in awe watching you colour that castle, you just chuck colours at it and it turns out amazingly!

What worries me is the lack of testing for harmful substances. I find colored pencils particularly dangerous because you're constantly exposed to the residue on your hands or inhale them. The same applies for the paints used.

If I could wish for anything, it would be that this aspect is also tested. I know that this is done in my home country (Germany) when products are sold. But you can't control what people order from sites like Temu.
