I wish you stripped it down before putting the tru oil on. I have a mossberg 500 that I wanna try it on and it has the same stock finish. It would have been cool to see how it would look. It was a good video, keep em coming.

Look up refinishing ruger 10 22 by mark king.  The Ruger stock starts out looking like the Mossberg stock, but since MK stripped the finish off, it comes out looking like a work of art, after he applies many coats of Tru Oil.

Love your vid's. I'm currently going to try my first refinishing job on my Glenfield model 60-15. So far I stripped and am going to store to get the Tru-Oil and some sort of stain non sealing. Got some pics to show you but am unsure how to post them here. Thank's.

The only thing I don't like about Tru Oil is that it is not like using Hop's gun oil, like you use on the metal & wood after cleaning. I used to use that to build up a real oil finish. You'd let it soak in for a bit & wipe off the excess.With Tru Oil, it's actually a French Polish. A mixture of linseed oil, shellac & varnish we learned to do in Jr High woodshop. Good instructor that was old school. Anyway, that's why this stuff sets up like it does if you take too long wiping it on. It soaks in....just not as much as regular gun oil would. I used Birchwood/Casey Tru Oil & their liquid bluing kit on a variant 1 Crosman model 160 .22 cal Pellgun I found. 1955-56 model run. You can see my progress on my Airgun Shooter channel on here. After watching these videos, & not having done one for some 40 years, I decided to give these new products a try...

If you want to keep the Tru Oil from forming skin inside the bottle , add fish bowl gravel ( wash first ) . Add gravel as the bottle gets lower. The gravel replaces the air in the bottle. Just keep adding gravel as the oil gets used up in the bottle . I have done this for years .  DUKE

You could use a wood rod to fit in the end to hold the project.
I used fishing line to hang my Vepr rifle wood while I Tru-Oiled it.
I used the liquid on the 5 or 6 coats then I used the Tru-oil spray for the last couple coats.  I did one coat per day. Seem like a lot, but It will turn out so much better then if you rush it.

personally I think its a little easier to work with and gives you a little more room for different sheen's but its really a matter of preference and taste

and what product would you have used to chemically strip it?  I was hoping you atleast give us that info.   Im looking to get all the grime and build up hand oils that have built up over time.

My first coat of TruOil is a blend of 1 part oil in 2 parts mineral spirits to get better penetration/absorption into the wood. My 2nd coat is a 1 to 1 blend. Then I start with undiluted TruOil (no mineral spirits). All are VERY thin coats. Heavy coats end up with runs.

depends on a few factors. When I reduce it with mineral spirits it dries to the touch very quickly. Thick 100% tru oil coats can take a lot of time to dry. more than 24 hours in some cases
