People with dementia experience a gradual decline in their mental abilities and their capacity to care for themselves. This decline occurs over a prolonged period, making it difficult to identify the final, terminal stage of the disease. During the advanced stage of dementia, people are unable to communicate verbally, are completely dependent on others, and are at greater risk of contracting infections, such as pneumonia.
Throughout this entire disease process, their families are key in providing the care and attention they require. However, caregiver burden, the complex decision-making process regarding hospital and/or assisted living facility admissions, nutrition, etc., are daily challenges they often face.
Two outstanding caregivers will share their experiences caring for people with dementia.
Speakers:
• Isolda Sucarrarts Salmerón: Nursing Assistant. She works in cognitive stimulation for people with mild dementia at the Terrassa Health Consortium. Caregiver for family members with advanced dementia in its final stages.
• Ingrid Bullich Marín: Geriatric Nurse Specialist. PhD in Nursing Science. Expert in palliative care.
Head of the Frail and Dependent Patient Area. Parc Taulí Health Corporation Consortium. Sabadell (Barcelona).
Member of the Palliative Care Group of the Official College of Nurses of Barcelona (COIB).
• Francisco Sanchís Palomar: Retired lawyer and de facto guardian of two people with dementia who currently live in a long-term care facility.
• Teresa Gea Soriano: Nurse, Master's in Palliative Care from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Postgraduate degree in Nursing Care in Palliative Care from the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO). Currently works at the Nuestra Señora del Carmen Sociosanitary Center in Valencia.
Moderator:
• Marisa de la Rica Escuín: Specialist Nurse in Geriatrics. PhD in Nursing. President of the Spanish Association of Nursing in Palliative Care (AECPAL)
