❎ Our Thyroid
Our thyroid is one of the most underestimated organs in the human body. Many people don't know where the thyroid is located or what its purpose is. It's a small, relatively unknown organ, but it performs enormously important functions for the body. The thyroid is a gland that produces and secretes hormones. In humans, it is located in the neck, just below the larynx, directly in front of the vocal cords. Due to its shape, with two wings on either side of the trachea, the thyroid is also popularly known as the butterfly gland. A healthy thyroid is about the size of a thumb and weighs between 18 and 25 grams, depending on gender.
The main function of our thyroid is to produce hormones that the body needs for metabolism and growth. For example, oxygen and energy consumption, body heat, mineral and water balance depend on it. This mini-organ thus controls almost all important functions in the body: the entire metabolism, heart and circulation, stomach and intestines, nerves and muscles. From its "location" in the neck, the thyroid gland and its hormones also influence personality and mental well-being, sexuality and fertility, and even the growth of skin, hair, and nails.

❎ Our Thyroid Hormones
The main function of the thyroid gland is the storage and production of very important hormones: 1. Triiodothyronine, 2. Thyroxine, and 3. Calcitonin.
The synthesis of the hormones triiodothyronine and thyroxine takes place in several steps with the help of various proteins, enzymes, and starting materials. As the names of the hormones suggest, iodine is an essential component. The majority of thyroid hormones are bound to certain blood proteins; however, only the unbound, so-called free thyroid hormones are effective. Therefore, only the free thyroid hormones fT3 and fT4 are measured.

Thyroid antibodies are determined when looking for the cause of a thyroid dysfunction. The antibodies are produced when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own thyroid tissue. They can also block the effect of thyroid hormones.

In this video, I explain the significance of an elevated or decreased TSH level, fT3 and fT4, and antibodies such as TRAK and TPO. Calcitonin.
