On March 23, 1997, the long-standing rivalry between the hard cores of Ajax and Feyenoord spiraled completely out of control. In a field near Beverwijk, hundreds of hooligans faced each other during what would later become known as the Battle of Beverwijk.

In the midst of the chaos was Carlo Picornie, a well-known and respected figure within the F-Side. The 35-year-old Ajax hooligan would not leave the field alive that day. In this video, we reconstruct how the rivalry between the two groups became increasingly violent over the years, what happened at Beverwijk on March 23, 1997, and how the police and justice system subsequently tried to determine who was responsible for the death of Carlo Picornie.

We also look at the court cases, the consequences for the Dutch hooligan scene, and why the Battle of Beverwijk remains one of the most notorious events in Dutch football history nearly thirty years later.
