Tuning a recurve can send you screaming into the woods.  One recommendation contained in Hill’s 2 part series on the Internet is to use a hard plunger,  center shot and bring the bare shaft into the fletched arrow group by adjusting limb poundage.

Thanks for posting this video and showing the painful process of getting the arrows tuned to the bow. I just thought I was on my own struggling with this stuff. Good to know it's a hard process and not just my own incompetance. 😊

I use Howard Hill's bareshaft tuning method.

It is called French Curve cut feathers.

remember, when you add fletching (10-20 grains) to the back of the arrow it will stiffen the spine a bit.

Bare shaft vs. fletched is as simple as a fletched shaft will always be stiffer than bare shaft. So, if your bare shaft shoots slightly to the right, just add fletchings. It's a time proven method.

great vid, thanks. It shows how hard a good recurve setup can be.  And you're in the "easy zone" when it comes to arrows.  I had a hard time finding a 31'' arrow for a 24lb bow... that flew well: it meant buying 'long' arrows and weakening them with ridiculously heavy points.

I just tried increasing the draw weight of my recurve and noticed that my grouping isnt as good as it was at the lower weight. This maybe that my arrows arnt as tuned as they were before. Thanks for the video Steve, think I'm going to have to come into the store and seek your advice and maybe test some different arrows. Great video as always mate.

When u cut ur arrows do u cut both the fletched and unfletched?

Hallo Steven ....Hannes from Austria is here .... what do you think of the possibility American Bowhunters use the technic to cut of only the effective part of the fletching. They often use bareshafts where the bottom of the feathers are still on the shaft ...what do you think? ...because in your video the 600 shows slightley weak ....but perhaps, without changing point weight you will get it ...I hope I could explain that correctly.

One thing though, with RH bow, bare shafts going right means arrow weak not stiff. Stiffen plunger to bring that in.

what are some reason a person would get vane strikes on the bow hand?

How is that possible that you get only 190fps with 45# bow with what I guess are fairly light arrows? I get 217fps with 45# using ACEs.

Hi.  As a relative newbie, I'm just getting into tuning now.  I'm using X7's at the moment (may shift to ACC's or similar in the outdoor season if I build up to longer ranges, but the X7's are great indoors) and like in your video I found the bare shafts are grouping with the rest at 18m, without making any adjustments.  I guess that means they are a pretty good match for my bow?

BTW are you using brass nock points on that string?  I think most experienced archers prefer using thread nock points, if nothing else they are lighter.
