Dead Island 2 Is Better Than It Should Have Been

I wanted to talk about a game I liked a fair amount but I wound up talking a bit too much about it. I'm taking you through my entire playthrough of Dead Island 2 and its DLCs and talking about the parts I like. I'll probably never make another video in this style where I cover the entire game but I think there are some highlights in there.

Played Dead Island 1 with a few friends. We realized fairly early that our characters cant move through eachother and that turned our playthrough into a comedy set.

I once blocked one of my homies in a room for 15 minutes and left a whole story quest to my other friend, and we continued fucking with eachother by body blocking or shooting explosives when someone is next to them. Had us crying laughing at some points

While Sam B admittedly has limited plot relevance, he is responsible for the best joke in the game. It is insanely funny that he goes around getting bit up constantly under the assumption he'll be totally fine since he was immune in Dead Island 1 without ever once considering that maybe this is a new virus strain.

The decision to go from fully open world to smaller HUB levels was a stroke of brilliance. It allows a lot more interactivity and detail than one big mostly empty map would've. Hope they continue with the HUB levels for Dead Island 3.

THE 10-year in development, twice-cancelled, sequel to a 6/10 zombie game released far beyond the relevancy of zombies in the mainstream zeitgeist that somehow didn't suck

as a Californian who has visited the locations depicted in this game many times, i gotta say they really nailed it. it really helps the immersion factor when theres zombies on streets youve walked down dozens of times.

Funny detail, Homefront the Revolution went though almost the same problems that Dead Island had.
Meaning that the only thing that Damnbuster Studio has ever done was saving what it left of a game in development hell two times in a row

For a series that was so initially derivative, I really like that they're suddenly getting all dimensional and weird in the sequel. I think the 10 year delay might have helped in a way, as zombies were so played out in the 2010s. No way you're one upping Dead Rising 1 especially, but 2 and 3, Left 4 Dead, the mid RE games of the era, Cod zombies, Dying Light which was the most direct competition, zomboid which would grow over the decade etc. Waiting that out gave this game room to breathe

I still think that first trailer for Dead Island is one of the greatest game trailers of all time. Definitely up there with the Hitman Absolution killer nuns as one of the most memorable

DI2 has this tight presentation, where every corner of the map feels like it got equal attention. I love the game, like every weapon has and skill has equal usability. It feels like the rare game that went through development hell and still came out great.

You know the more I think about it, could the bride zombie be an immune like person that just gave into the zombie due to the emotional toll. That gives me a new view on that. Underrated game!!

Fun fact LA does have a pretty robust metro system! The depiction in the game is probably based on the red&purple line, which go through Hollywood and past it.

This is of course entirely useless because no one in their right mind would go to Hollywood! Hope this helps :)

I am having such a blast playing as Amy for her dexterity, and bare-knuckle boxing almost every zombie I come across. I have a whole inventory of highly upgraded weapons, but i only ever use them when punching isn't viable, like zombies on fire or wrapped in barbed wire

But one of my few complaints in this game is that the rate at which zombies respawn is way too fast. I love the way that they spawn in (sitting up after being buried in sand on the beach, or emerging from sewers) it's very creative, but mentally exhausting when you can never get a moments rest outside of predetermined safe zones
