The Rest Is Football

Gary is joined by his former England teammate Terry Butcher to discuss his powerful new documentary, Butcher: Invisible Wounds. Terry opens up about the devastating loss of his son, Chris, and explains how sharing his story in the documentary has helped him cope with his grief and continue the healing process.

The pair also look back on Terry's remarkable football career, from the glory years at Ipswich Town and Rangers to his unforgettable experiences with England. They revisit some of the most iconic moments in English football history, including the infamous "Hand of God" match against Argentina, the Italia '90 World Cup campaign that saw England come closer than any side since 1966 to lifting the trophy and Terry's legendary blood-soaked performance against Sweden that became one of the game's most enduring images.

Butcher: Invisible Wounds airs on ITV4 on Tuesday 9 June at 10pm.

I have 3 boys, sadly my youngest Alfie died 18 months ago aged 19. He was a force of nature who had so much energy and lust for life that it's hard to understand how that can just disappear. People say time is a great healer and things get easier but they don't. You just pretend to cope for the sake of others but sometimes it becomes exhausting and all the memories come flooding in.
I will look forward to Terry's documentary someday just not right now. 👍❤️

A true gentleman, England, Ipswich and Rangers legend.

Loved this interview because it also shows he has a great wry sense of humour, for someone embarrassed to be in front of the camera he’s a natural.

Condolences to him and his family on the tragic passing of his son, may he rest in peace.

What a superb human being. As a young newspaper reporter on Sunderland, I was so impressed by Terry Butcher when he was the manager at the old Roker Park. How decent he was, how passionate he was, how approachable he was, To live through what he has is utterly devastating. So strong, And a key part of the best England team I’ve ever watched.

They don’t make them like that anymore, sadly…… What a man! Nice work Gary 👏

I think Terry was one of those players fans of all clubs liked and respected,he was always one of my favourite players as a kid and nobody put more effort in for the 3 Lions.

Great interview, Gary.

As ever with Gary, his compassion and humanity shine through. Two players of the same generation, very different in style and personality, but clearly both like and understand each other.

I was born with Cerebral Palsy, I'm mum wrote a letter to Graeme Souness and I got invited to ibrox for the day. I met all the players but none came close to Terry. I still have a picture of Terry and i in my hallway. I admire the big man. For all he's gone through he's a wonderful man and still my hero xx
