When AC/DC rocked Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL on their 2025 tour, Modern Drummer’s David Frangioni caught up with drummer Matt Laug for an exclusive rundown of his DW drums and Paiste cymbals.

Matt takes us through his full setup for the tour and shares insight into his incredible career — from recording drums on Alanis Morissette’s legendary Jagged Little Pill album to performing on massive stages around the world.

Matt understood the assignment: loud, warm, THUD, and phat.

Sad Phil is not there to guide us through all this. But i clicked instantly ofcourse. AC/DC are the best.

Thanks for this video! Been so curious to how Matt was thinking how to solve this gig the best way. I love that he honours Phil's style and tries to copy it to his best effort, great!

Phil is one of my all time favorites, but Matt is doing an amazing job... great insights into what made Phil's playing so great and Matt honors it completely... thanks for posting...

Fucking great guy Matt is. And an amazing drummer, he gets the feel of AC/DC. He ain't no Phil, but by god he swings and works so well with AC/DC

Every Chump out there thinks it would be so easy to play with AC/DC , and always rag on Phil saying he is rubbish or only plays simple beats... Their stuff is a lot harder to play "right" as Matt just explains.... He is doing a great job ...

I have nothing but the upmost respect for Matt! He did a fantastic job drumming in St. Louis September 8, 2026!

Saw Matt at PowerTrip and on the current tour in Chicago. He really brought back the sound of Phil. I've seen Phil live many times as well as Simon and Chris...and Matt really brings "that" sound back. Short of actually having Phil there to play, Matt was the best choice they could have made. Kudos.

I love this video! The interview at the front before the kit rundown where they chat and walk the stage is a nice touch. They should do that with all the kit rundowns, if time permits. You really get to know the drummer if you are unfamiliar, plus David gets such great conversations flowing. Great job MD! As we all know the drummer who got the touring gig with Alanis was the late great Taylor Hawkins, and he launched his career from that so I'm glad they both ended up with nice long careers doing what they love.My friend took his young sons to see AC/DC on this tour in Boston and they had a blast. His goal when his son was three or four was to ween him off of the Wiggles and into something rock, like he and his late father loved when he was a kid. An AC/DC song did it (mission accomplished!) and they enjoyed the show!

I like how David creates space for micro lessons during his interviews. For instance, around 7:55 into this interview, he draws pearls of wisdom out of Matt on the importance of preparation for a gig.

Saw AC/DC in Perth recently, last time was in 1988. Sound was awesome, better than ever, although Brian cant be expected to belt out high notes like he was 25 again. Matt has really nailed the Phil Rudd swing and style. My 12 yo daughter was squealing with utter delight, well done and great video. Thanks.

This is a fantastic interview. Having the right mix is everything and breaking sticks and cymbals is an indication of overcompensation. Matt puts everything into perspective here and it's clear why he is the man for this gig!

Nice to see the insides of my favorite band and nice job from Matt

Saw Matt with Slash's Snakepit 25 years ago, and love his work on that album. Also knew of his work with Vasco Rossi (which i gathered is how Vasco got Slash on one of his songs/videos), but i had no idea he recorded Jagged Little Pill! Wow! As he said... everyday's a school day. Great guy, and comes across as very humble.

I really enjoyed this video. Matt is a perfect choice for AC/DC. Nice guy, good drummer that understands the what and why of how Phil Rudd help make the the iconic sound. Thank you for this.
