Remaking 1901 by Phoenix to Learn Why It’s So Good

I rebuilt 1901 by Phoenix from scratch to figure out what makes it so good.

Phoenix built 1901 out of a handful of parts that all lock together so tightly you can't change one without changing all of them. In this video I rebuild the whole song from the ground up — the gritty unison synth bass, the soft guitar it rubs against, the ghostly bell buried in the intro, the hybrid live-sampled drums programmed by hand — and take apart what each piece is doing, all the way to the one moment in the chorus I really wanted to get to.

Along the way: why the bass hits on the upbeat instead of the downbeat, why the verse drops that bass note down from the F to the D (and why every other instrument had to follow), the snare pushed forward an eighth note that keeps you permanently off balance, and the compression-and-release trick in the chorus that makes it feel like a box shrinking around you until it breaks open.

Also, I've been mishearing the last line of this song for years.

Leave a comment with anything you know about 1901 that I missed — or whatever this song reminds you of.
