11 Things Loma Linda Households Buy at Costco (And 5 They AVOID)

What does a Costco cart look like when it belongs to someone who has outlived most of the people he grew up with?

An hour east of Los Angeles sits a town where residents live measurably longer than the average American. There's no secret ingredient in that cart and nothing you'd have to order from anywhere. It's dried beans, canned chickpeas, quinoa, oats, a tin of olive oil, a bag of walnuts, soy milk, frozen vegetables and whole wheat bread — most of it Kirkland Signature, most of it bought in the biggest size on the shelf.

What makes it interesting is the other half. Costco is extremely good at putting a genuine bargain in front of you, and five of them get walked past on every single trip. Not out of discipline, and not to make a point. As he puts it: a bargain that doesn't fit your kitchen isn't a bargain, it's just something new to throw away in a month.

In this video an elder of that community takes you through the cart item by item, what each one replaces, and the five things he leaves on the shelf no matter what the sign says. The first one he skips is the item most people would call the best deal in the entire warehouse.
