Some of us older folks didn't have a cordless first drill.

We had a metal body corded drill. And we remember the first time we were using it with the on switch locked on and that guy got stuck and whipped out of our hands and started spinning around in circles until the cord wrapped around the drill enough to either pull the plug out or the unlucky ones it just stayed still and started smoking.
That's us older folks first drill experience.

The tape as a depth stop works better if you make it like a flag, sticking out the side. Then as soon as the flag wipes off the chips, you know you're close, and when it hits the wood, you're dead on. Better than just trying to line up the tape in the hole and compensating for parallax.

The 1st thing I learned was to make pilot holes before inserting screws.

What a great, informative video! So many folks try to stretch you along for 10 minutes while they deliver 1 minute's worth of info. Yours covers a lot of ground and never had me wishing you'd condensed it.

Tip: To extend battery life, don't leave them charged to 100% because the higher the voltage, the quicker the cells age. Ideally operate in the 20-80% range and store long-term at around 50%. This is not exact science but 4V per cell corresponds to 80% and 3.7 to 50-60%. 18V/20V battery packs have 5 cells in series so multiply these figures by 5. This is true for standard lithium-ion cells that reach 4.2V at full charge.

I learned more in the 19 minutes I spent watching your video than I have in decades, thanks! 😀

The best drill/driver tip that I ever got was to train yourself to use your middle finger on the trigger. Place your index finger along the body of the tool like you're pointing at what you're drilling/driving and you'll be able to steady the tool much more than if you use your index finger on the trigger.

Try this: hold a drill in your hand, place your index finger on the trigger, and push up on the end of the chuck. Then place your middle finger on the trigger and your index finger along the side of the body and push up on the chuck. You'll observe that the second method is more steady and requires more force to move the chuck upward.

I love that you made one of these videos again. It's been a while. I know you have bills to pay, but this is so much more useful to people than what is the latest sale at Lowes or HD.

12:33 - I also have a driver bit problem...
My problem is storage!

The speed switch on top doesn't just change speed it changes the torque the drill delivers. So if you need max torque lock it in drill then on the lowest speed and let the gearbox multiply torque

Fun tip, if you are worried about chargers, get some smart plug adapters (WiFi) they are crazy cheap you can set scheduals so easy on them, my whole shop shuts down after a certain time cause of theses no matter what I can't leave anything on by mistake even if I tried. Kasa makes 4 packs and surge protectors that are crazy cheap and reliable!

Good advice for newbies. The Wood Owl drills are top-shelf. I bought 2 of them to drill 42 dog holes in my 1-1/2" solid birch bench. I cleanly drilled them all with one drill bit and it was still cutting like new. Also, a cheap timer connected to your battery chargers will shut everything off at a preset time. Peace of mind and no more walks to the shop at 1:00 am to check. Don't ask. Haha Thx.

Some of the best advice I've seen. With my dad gone i had to wing it. You have bolstered what I knew, and taught what I need to know going forward. Dad was a superb carpenter

Leaving batteries on the charger overnight is the easiest trap. I get done working, put batteries on charger, go in house, relax for the night, and don't return to shop until the next morning. The worst case is my lawn mower charger in the shed. I may not return to the shed for a week.

I have to say this has been one of the most educational videos I've seen in a long time. I've learned a lot and thank you for posting this. You saved me a ton by enlightening me on the 90 degree drill attachment. I've been wanting a right angle drill but with battery costs so high it's prevented me from getting one. This one, which I had no idea existed is perfect. I'm taking other items in to consideration as well. Thanks again.

power strip for charging, leave the van or the workshop? make it muscle memory to turn the strip off... every single time...or put it on a timer , which can save a ton of hassle, and be a just in-case save.

This video was excellent. Very, very helpful for someone like me, who has used my drill inappropriately for years (not reading the instructions when I purchased it). Fabulous video.

Get yourself a dedicated SDS drill for masonry. The hammer mode on these drills is not a proper hammer, it is just offset gears that makes a nice rattle. This is why your drills may wear out prematurely. If you do have to use them on masonry put the speed to 1. This delivers more torque and less speed.
