Which criminal group is behind the downing of government aircraft in Nayarit? The Jalisco New Generation Cartel, according to Óscar Balderas.
In Código Negro, Óscar Balderas details that the Nayarit region, on the border with Jalisco, has been dominated by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, a group with at least three previous incidents of downing government aircraft. Balderas links this to the case of Audias Flores Silva, 'El Jardinero' (The Gardener), arrested 62 days after 'El Mencho' was killed when marines pulled him from a drainage ditch in Nayarit. He also explains the case of 'Capitán Sol' (Captain Sun), arrested after a 300-day investigation by the Mexican Navy related to fuel theft, which led them to locate him in cities in Europe. According to Balderas, the Navy acknowledges that a criminal structure has been entrenched within the institution since the previous presidential term, although he warns that presenting this arrest as the end of the network would be premature, as many loose ends remain at higher levels. Balderas points out that tax evasion involves corrupt politicians, businesspeople, and organized crime connected to high-ranking officials, and that this infiltration damages the image of an institution that polls consistently rank among the most trusted by Mexicans.
