Sandor’s horse snorts as he ties it outside the Crossroads Inn. Donning his hood, he scans the surrounding area, a modest number of patrons stream in and out of the reputable lodge and tavern. Once the horse is secured, he helps Arya dismount. The little Stark girl had been distraught ever since they left the Twins, the carnage and massacre caused by the Freys and Boltons still fresh in their minds. Sandor had listened to her cry when she thought he was fast asleep. He rarely felt sympathy, but he felt it for her.. He contemplates this for a time, making him think of his own sister, how she was before the Stranger had taken her so early. He also envied her, how she had a brother who seemingly loved her, something he never had himself. The day that monster shows compassion, was the day the Seven Hells would freeze over.
After ushering Arya to put up her hood, the two head inside the Inn and take a seat in the back. Sandor listens around him as he digs into his chicken and sips his ale. The prattling of surrounding patrons is a mixture of things, from harvests to births, business to maidens. The Hound starts to tune them out when he overhears something that makes him pause. King Joffrey was dead, allegedly poisoned by Lord Tyrion at the royal wedding, a knight in Lannister colors reports. The dwarf had been taken into custody, and Sansa Stark was nowhere to be found. As he goes back to his food, a faint whisper enters his ear.
Arya: Come on, we have to find Sansa.
The Hound: Bugger off with that idea, I’m not risking going back to that pissbowl.
Arya: You know Sansa, she isn’t safe there, now more than ever. If that doesn’t motivate you, think of the ransom aunt Lysa will pay for both of us.
The Hound (sighing): Damn it… fine we’ll ride down there.
Arya: Is that a touch of compassion?
The Hound: Don’t push it, girl.
A couple weeks later, Sandor watches the pair of Lannister guardsmen, deep in conversation. He and Arya had been scouting out the area around the Red Keep since they had entered the city, the tension is palpable among the Smallfolk as rumours of Tyrion's Trial spread further by the day. Lannister sword’s face grows animated as he moves onto the next part of his tale. Tyrion has supposedly declared a Trial by Combat and is searching for a champion. The trial would be held in the morning, and the Crown’s named champion is Ser Gregor Clegane. Sandor grunts as he attempts to stifle a gasp, which catches Arya’s attention. The dwarf is finished before the fight even begins, he thinks, who would even dare to clash with the infamous Mountain? At that moment, an idea forms.
Tyrion muses as he languishes in his bitter, miserable cell. How long had he been there? It had to have been a few days, perhaps a week. He lost track as the rats scurried and the silence deafened to where his thoughts were his only companion. Suddenly, a torchlight flickers, accompanied by yellow, glittering robes. Oberyn Martell stands in front of him, and the pair begin to talk. They talk about a plethora of topics, however the recurring topic that they both circle back to is Tyrion’s sister Cersei and her hatred for him.
Before Oberyn can continue, the door blasts off its hinges, kicking dust into the air, obscuring the doorway. When it settles, a large, looming figure stands, silhouetted by the torchlight. Assuming Cersei had sent the Mountain to kill them both, Oberyn pulls a dagger and takes a defensive stance in front of Tyrion. As he is about to advance, he is stopped by the figure speaking.
The Hound: No one kills my brother but me. I'll fight for you, dwarf.
Tyrion: Aren't you supposed to be fucking literally anywhere else right now? You’re a fugitive of the Crown!
The Hound: Heard that little shit Joffrey was dead. Arya Stark's here too. Say hello.
Arya: H-hi?
The Hound: Yep, she says hello.
Oberyn: You’re saying you want to take on Ser Gregor?
The Hound: That bastard brother of mine has hurt too many people; your sister, your nephew and niece, myself, among countless others.
Oberyn: Very well, I won’t stand in the way of this brotherly feud.
