There is something very British about the idea that civilisation may have been destroyed in nuclear armageddon, but the Antiques Roadshow must go on!

"Remember, if you haven't paid your brodcast licenses and are listening to this, you WILL envy the dead."

Imagine your shelter being broken into and instead of it being armed raiders, its the TV licence man still out collecting

I think "theres nothing to be gained by trying to get away" works better than saying something like "trying to evacuate" because it removes hope of escape. If people have even a small glimmer of hope in escaping they'll take it. Its cold and blunt. You can't outrun a nuclear blast so don't bother trying

The idea of walking through a completely destroyed postapocalyptic London street while a tinny television set running on solar power echoingly blares "THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE SOUUUUND OF MUUUUSIIIIIC" is bone-chilling lol

The simple language makes sense since some of the listeners are going to be children old enough to understand something extremely bad is happening but won't know how to respond.

We hardly want children fleeing hither and thither in the fallout only to melt on people's doorsteps.

It'd be terrible for morale after all.

Watching this eating a tin of kidney beans in my cupboard by candlelight now 👍

Nothing's gone wrong, its just a good way to spend a wet sunday afternoon

I remember the first time I actually watched all of Mitchell and Webb was March 2020. The quiz broadcast was very appropriate for the time in hindsight.

I remember the night of Chernobyl a simple caption that “ radioactive cloud will pass over Britain tonight please remember to close your windows.”

The thing is "The Quiz Broadcast" series of sketches starts off quite light and cheery to an extent, but as it goes on the tone turns from being optimistic and trying to maintain a familiar order in a moment of disaster to the sudden realisation that "those who used to be us" have gotten inside and a herd of zombies burst in and end up killing everyone (even themselves) except for the host and blind contestant Peter. The two of them are just left standing in a wreaked bunker/studio with the knowledge that although they survived they were so much worse off than those that died. Yet it's hilirious the entire way through and it's the textbook example for how to do Black Comedy.

Ahhhh , that's Numberwang

REMAIN INDOORS

I hope they've upgraded their equipment to at least HD. Cant stand emergency broadcasts in 480p.

If I had to relentlessly listen to Julie Andrew's singing "The Sound of Music" and Vera Lynn singing "We'll Meet Again", I'd happily walk outside and just let the radiation take me

From what I recall reading of the time, the UK government's policy was to keep the economy running for as long as possible, right up to impact if possible. Great Britain is too small to get away from even a medium attack, so the thinking was, earn as much currency as possible to buy help from anyone offering it.  The point of staying in the home in theory it also made getting help to survivors simpler  But it was for simpler admin.,  There were no public shelters and it made identifying causalities easier "We know Number 59 had a family of four and we have found four bodies, so we can presume that is the family".

Congratulations on winning fuel Peter

I loved the Mitchell and Webb look

"Hans, are we the baddies?!"

1:27 not very secret, eh?

That broadcast is even darker than it seems on the surface. The bit at 3:21 about how you might be without food and shelter is because local coordinators had been told that after an atomic attack they were not to help people who had fled their homes. I watched a YouTube video about this called "Why Protect and Survive became so Controversial" from the "Imperial War Museums" channel just the other day. It was a good video.

That BBC advert is chilling to listen to
