It’s not about money, it’s about being considerate and polite

Your lessons are good, but it’s not the rich who live by these rules, it’s the old school people, aristocracy, royalty. You can be rich and have terrible manners. Its not the money in your bank it’s your upbringing.

"Just because you have money doesn't mean you have class"

It’s not about money, it’s about class and upbringing.

I would add another sign of good manners. That being to refrain from foul or coarse language. Nothing screams classlessness like a rude vocabulary.

I once had a job where I worked with Old Money. Yes. Class is not showing off, making others comfortable, being relaxed. You feel so accepted and graciously welcome around them. After all, they feel no need to prove anything.

The essence of etiquette is respect for others, and class is not a matter of money.

I grew up around manners, mainly my fathers dad. He was a cowboy. He removed his hat upon meeting someone and it always came off indoors. This was something i observed before i was old enough to go to school. He also treated people the way he wanted to be treated and was remembered fondly by so many people because of that. He was not rich and barely had the money to be called middle class. The thing is, he had class and manners, not money.

Be yourself, be genuine, be polite - this always goes a long way with people. Most people have a good internal BS meter and a genuine person will always be accepted.

in my twenties i read a book on social etiquette because i had made some major manner mistakes at a few gatherings (raised by wolves). though nothing was said to me at the time, because all the party guests had class and were polite, i could tell i had unwittingly done something rude. since then, between the book and social observation, i have become more confident and feel relaxed in any social situation now. good manners make it easier to navigate community. my favorite learned manner was figuring out when to leave a dinner party at a polite timeframe. it made perfect sense -- roughly, when the second cup of coffee is offered. never knew.

We were not Old Money but my dad was Old South. I'm over 70 now and a couple things I remember were: stand up when an elderly person enters the room (it's from Leviticus 19:32), and men don't wear hats indoors (that's just about gone). My mother said that a handshake should be initiated by a woman.

Saying that 'introducing yourself before being introduced is a no-no' only holds good if there is someone there to introduce you. If not, and there are just 2 of you standing there, then you DO have to introduce yourself or risk being regarded as rude.

Queen Elizabeth II was at a formal banquet when a waitress dropped a tray making a great racket. Everyone except the Queen looked at the unfortunate girl. Elizabeth was raised with too much grace to share in the girl’s embarrassment.

The lady had class!

So many more things, like you always hold a drink glass in your left hand at get-togethers. 1) it leaves you right hand free to shake hands. 2) you hand isn't cold when you shake that hand. 3) you aren't awkwardly switching hands at an introduction.

As a lower middle class but decently educated person, I don’t have a compelling reason to pretend to be old money or to hide my authenticity. However, all of these points makes sense because it will make the other person more comfortable if I come across as less needy, and that is a kind gesture I CAN do- so I appreciate these tips :-)

Decades ago, one of my friends from college was invited to join a family in their private rail car for a vacation in upper peninsula Michigan. She said it was like a living room on wheels, and included a kitchen and chef. When it was lunch time, she anticipated something expensive and exotic, but instead it was sloppy joes and a lettuce & tomato salad served on paper plates. It wasn't that the hosts were cheap: that is what they wanted, and didn't feel a need to impress anyone, and as for the paper plates, they hated the clinking sound of china on the poorly maintained rails, and also had some consideration for the staff, who would need to wash china.

Well done with all correct points. I have taught etiquette for 30 years. The only point that I would modify is saying "How do you do" back to someone leaving out," It is lovely to see you" When we don't know a person, we really don't know if it is lovely to see them yet. By saving that for the end of the conversation the other person goes away with that feeling. Your videos are excellent. Thank you.

Nice list. I would add that you're actually talking about class instead of wealth, but most of the other comments have covered that.

If i could add an eleventh to the list, it would be "Don't whine or complain to strangers." No matter your health problems or how bad your day has been or how lousy your job may be, don't share all of that with people you just met. That seems obvious, but I hear people do that on an almost daily basis.
