In 1975 pretty internet, cell phones, GPS, the day of paper maps we were more adventurous 😉
I appreciate your frugality. We saved so we could take 6 weeks off work in 1975 & traveled on a 550 Honda from Seattle to Rochester NY 8 states & into Canada to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls before entering NY state.
Anyway not to bore y'all with old adventures, but NOTHING remotely close to you 2!!
We were skint tgen also camped or stayed with relatives if there were any along the way. Sometimes KOA campgrounds so we could wash our very limited clothing.
I grew up camping & fishing in the Pacific NW  & we did the same with our children . But now our trips include hotels & beds 😊
