Episode 11 - The D'Addario Debacle, Everything Is Expensive & Dream Guitars

Riffs, Beards & Gear Two

This week on the podcast, Mike and I dig into the recent D’Addario AI disaster, talk about why seemingly EVERYTHING in the guitar world has gotten so expensive, and ask an important question: if Mike could design his own signature guitar from scratch, what would it actually look like? AI controversy, gear prices, dream guitars and plenty of questionable opinions along the way.

As always, expect plenty of guitar talk, industry stories, questionable opinions, and a few laughs along the way.

Things cost what they cost. I may complain, especially in recent times, that everything is too expensive, and it's a valid complaint, but I never expect anything to be done about it. My situation is simple. I'm retired, on a fairly meager income, and I spend most of my funds on the important things like food, meds, clothing... you get the idea. When I look at guitars & gear, my reality is that I simply can't afford it. Boutique guitars, amps & pedals are UNOBTAINABLE for me, and knowing that, I don't miss them nor do I spend one minute fawning for them. There's no point.
The positive side of this is that I spend my time playing what I have and enjoying it! Hell, I might even be improving... a little.

AI sucks. Except Allen Iverson. Inflation sucks. Except balloons. Greedy corporations suck. There's no "except for" with that one.

I remember when boss overdrives were like 39 dollars brand new and the metal guys didn't like them. (Old)

I have been building guitars as a hobby for 16 years now use first guitar cost around 400-600in parts wood and shop supplies, now I am near 2000$ for a build.

Great episode; you guys cracked me up! Oh, and I also recently had the same thought of being able to time travel back to the 90s. It was a much better time!

Someone needs to make an HM2 clone in a clear plastic enclosure and call it a transparent distortion.

I recently started building my own guitars for myself, if you have all the tools already, get the good wood, quality hardware and pickups, with taxes, (since i'm just a guy and I don't have a company to write off expenses) I can build myself a great guitar (T-style) for 1200-1400 with calculated modest labour wages for myself that I'm obviously not paying myself. I also didn't count the expierience, I am modding stuff and repairing, setting up as a hobby since 10 years.

Read, "I, Pencil" by Leonard Read and this all makes sense.

It's like PRS "10 Tops". The wood figuring isn't guaranteed. The "10" is whatever was graded a 10 and that was in stock that day. We've all seen inexpensive guitars with phenomenal wood and prices ones with tops that are meh.
