I’ve lived in one of those earthen homes in Northern Europe — it smelled of mud and smoke, but inside… it was warmer than any modern house I’ve known

I slept in the basement of my parent’s house. In the summer time, outside reaches 43c. While in the basement, the temperature stayed around 24c. This is an advantage of the dugout in the summer.

This is seriously impressive… the way people built to survive harsh winters back then is on another level

What surprised me most when researching Viking Age shelters is how much insulation mattered more than structure. Turf walls + low entrances could change indoor temperature dramatically. Medieval people understood heat retention better than we think.

2:48 They actually called it the comfort zone — the middle of the slope where warm air flowed down and moisture didn’t collect. That’s brilliant natural engineering. No tools, no thermometers, just pure observation and instinct. Imagine finding the perfect spot using nothing but experience and survival sense. Do you think we’ve lost that kind of intuition today?

I was born in the late 30’s many homes in my town still used wood for heat& cooking. Unlike today families went to bed much earlier, as there was no TV. We had no. TV until the start of the late 50’s and very few homes had them. I remember my living room full of neighbour kid after school to watch TV. . Years later in the 90’s I was I.  Italy and the same thing

I've lived off grid with woodstove for cooking and heat. Had to haul water in for drinking and washing. Used well with hand pump and 5 gallon pail for flushing toilet. Lived in two other homes with just wood for heat but had water and hydro in those.

History like this deserves more attention. Beautifully done.

0:38 we are off grid and we have to chop wood everyday for heat

15-20 cubic meters of wood is an exaggeration. For a house built in a similar way, with 100-year-old windows and doors, without modern insulation, with an area of 75 square meters divided into three rooms, in a winter lasting 6 months with an average outside temperature of -15 degrees Celsius, up to 8 cubic meters of oak wood or 10 cubic meters of beech wood is consumed with an average indoor temperature of +18 / +25 degrees Celsius .What matters at firewood is its type , length, and thickness not the quantity . The thicker and longer it is, the slower it will burn, but it will release more heat over a longer period of time.

1960s,and  70s  year of my childhood  we are  living a simple life in the province   using  clay pots  and  fire wood for cooking

If the SHTF in the modern world, some may be going back to these times.
