It is not easy to do what GG does. He does not just play the piano: he has a dialog with the composer himself. And what comes out of it is the same score, the same masterpiece we came to love, but rejuvenated.
I admire Gould not only as the unequalled interpreter of Bach’s keyboard compositions, but for his similar interpretations of Beethoven’s keyboard music. Gould plays Beethoven’s slow movements slower than other pianists, but he plays Beethoven’s fast movements faster than any other pianist. He can afford to do that because his unequalled technical abilities, and that contrast creates even more tension which is the main character in Beethoven’s music.
Glenn said he wasnt a teacher. Although he didn't teach private piano lessons at the keyboard, he was certainly teaching when he gave lectures like this one. 😀
I sometimes have the feeling that Gould is the only one who plays the "Prestissimo" as intended by Beethoven. When Beethoven writes "Prestissimo", he means it.
Fascinating. Gould struggles with middle period Beethoven but, with late Beethoven, he realises that he can relate to the great composer’s arcane compositional research and especially to his contrapuntal engagement with older styles (especially Bach) and hey presto Gould can play it marvellously! It has its eccentricities (of course) but it’s so intelligent and clear and revelatory. The impeccability of his fast playing is astounding!
If I was.allowed to go back in time, I'd ask to go back to hear Beethoven play the piano in his 20s and 30. His compatriots say he played with a genius beyond compare. Glenn Gould.is marvelous, but his brilliance makes me all the more want to hear the great master himself -- before his growing deafness sadly encroached on his piano playing. How I'd love to hear the great master play.
I am speechless!! I have never heard this recording and ashamed to admit that. No one has or probably ever will play this masterpiece with such glory, energy, perfection, and tenderness all in one moment of time. Grateful this is posted. Thank you so much!
There will never be anybody alike glenn, once in a universe of an artist, his performance of 2nd movement have been in my rotation since I’ve been a kid, cadence and rhythm is unparalleled, he was in a realm of his own. The only reason i might ever visit canada to see his chair.
Imagine having this level of expertise and analysis on public TV. This is an absolute treasure. A genius like the one and only Glenn Gould, speaking to us, breaking down music with us. An incredible privilege.
And of course, there is the music itself. Absolute magic.
