These SL's were everywhere in south florida and Miami in early 80's - absolutely "THE" car for the upper crust of society and a status symbol for most all celebrities of the time..
It's amazing how many of these R107s I still see cruising around four decades later (and usually still in fantastic cosmetic condition too). Same goes for W126 S-class of this era.
The R107 has aged quite well. The gas station attendant who said, "at least they'll be around in 20 years" was making a huge understatement.
The 450SL came out shortly before I was learning to drive. Both the R107 and the Ferrari 308 were my dream cars as I got my drivers license. Through years of research, I've seen the folly of purchasing any of the V8 Ferraris with timing belts! I picked up an 88 560SL last December in the same Signal Red over Black leather as the one in this video. Mine has aftermarket Gullideckel 17" wheels and a newer Blaupunkt stereo, but is otherwise an original car. I can't tell you how much I love driving it! Out of my seven cars, my 560SL is my favorite. The 14 City/17 Highway is pretty accurate although I've done a bit better on some long drives on the highway. But with a 22 gallon gas tank, range is still better than most Teslas! Mercedes got it right with the R107.
