Is your "premium" dog food actually premium? In this no-BS dog food tier list, I rank 27 of the most popular dog food brands based on one critical factor: bioavailability. That means how much nutrition your dog actually absorbs versus how much they just poop out. You'll be shocked where some expensive "vet-recommended" brands actually rank—and which budget option might be better than food costing 3x as much.

🔥 What You'll Learn:
✅ How to read dog food labels like a professional
✅ The bioavailability test (why poop size matters)
✅ The legume and heart disease connection (DCM warning)
✅ Why fresh food produces tiny, odorless poops
✅ The ingredient splitting trick brands use
✅ Best dog food for every budget level

Why are all the so-called vet recommended brands such poor quality? I follow what my vet recommends for many things but NOT what I feed my dog. When my senior dog began having kidney function issues, I did what my vet recommended and started her on Hills Kidney formula - she got worse. The food is bland and not appealing at all so she actually lost weight and no longer enjoyed mealtime. ;-( I did some research and started making her food myself with real ingredients and she got better. I took her for a check up and didn't tell my vet I stopped feeding Hills. He was like "wow! I'm impressed with her improvement" I then told him what I had been feeding and he said well "keep doing what you are doing because it's working". Those so-called veterinary food brands are a corporate grift that preys on people's love for their pets.

My dog used to get hot spots every summer. After watching this video, I realized her food had a lot of fillers. I switched things up and also added Wellix Natural Antibiotic Drops to her food during a flare-up. She healed faster than usual.

I make my dog a homemade raw diet and it comes down to a comparative $150 for a 50 lb adult dog ($195 for her cuz shes 62 lbs). So, the cost of the honest kitchen but with the quality of brands like raw paw company, we feed raw, darwins, and other premade ground food. But with additional benefits such as the dental benefit of chewing on raw meaty bones and the peace of mind knowing everything is human grade because, well, it's designed for human consumption.
For her I feed daily:

1 leg quarter
1 chicken wing
8 oz 90/10 ground turkey
8 oz chicken gizzards
1.5 oz beef liver
2.5 oz beef kidney (optional)
2 tbsp sweet potato
1 egg yolk
1 fish oil capsule
1 drop Vitamin e oil
0.75 oz canned pink salmon
Add:
Iron (15 mg)
Iodine (0.37 mg)
Zinc (19 mg)
Cosequin (2 tablets, meets manganese)

Of course protein sources and vegetable type can be rotates, but it's not absolutely necessary because I purchased a raw food feeding calculator formulator and made sure it meets all the NRC nutrient requirements. Basically, it checks out as 100% complete and balanced on paper because I did the math myself, same as any AAFCO complient storebought kibble, with better bioavailabilty.

It's definitely beneficial to me to pay (if we're using cost for 50 lb dog) $150/month over $320-400/month for the brands you mentioned. But it does take work to measure these out yourself with a food scale, and I batch prep 1-2 weeks worth of food. If you're willing to take on the extra work, this is a potential option for you too!

Great Video- loved the information on how dogs chew (lower jaw doesn't move side to side) and also basics of dog's physiology (including high acidity in dogs' stomachs.) First YouTube about dog nutrition I've seen that educates dog owners on these functions. Also, loved the breakdown (tier levels, nutritional value, cost) for dog food brands. I ended up buying several recommended brands including Arcana and am super happy my dog now has kibble she likes. Based on the 346 comments below- a lot of folks are also benefiting from this video. With Appreciation and Thanks to the Canine Revolution Guy!

Best dog food review I’ve ever seen. Especially when there’s no 50% off your first box advertisement anywhere in it… Ha ha ha.
Currently feeding The Farmers Dog, which is great and River loves it. I ordered a sample box from unkibble so I was happy to see that was up there also. That’s simply for my convenience. He’ll get whichever one he prefers.

I recently switched to Open Farm because I wanted to avoid legumes. I think there were two foods in the video where you didn't include the monthly cost. Open Farm was one of them.

Our dog is very picky, but loves the Stella and Chewy meal mixers. We feed her that with boiled chicken tenders. She's 16 now

Been down the dog food rabbit hole myself the last couple years. Didn't know about the "ingredient splitting" trick they're doing... Thank you for pointing that out!

Awesome review! I’m in the process of switching dog foods. My Husky’s liver enzymes are abnormal, and I’m thinking about the We Feed Raw diet. I’ve been all over the internet researching the tons of brands out there, and this review has helped me save a ton of time. Thank you!! 👍👍❤

Shout out to Fromm! Best dog food in my humble opinion. I know not all dogs are the same and neither are their owners. But I think it deserves an honorable mention. 😊

High Pressure Processing cost me a $4500 vet bill and I almost lost my rough collie due to over run of bad gut bacteria and no good gut bacteria. I went to a commercial raw without HPP and he is healthy and happy again. I won't take HPP for free, they do not put any enzymes back in their food. He started raw at 8 weeks old and is almost 4 years old. Healthiest dog I've ever had except for that incident.

Just wanted to make note that green tripe is the stomach lining of a cow. Not the intestines as he commented. This list is great and very informative! Thanks so much for taking the time to do the research!!
