A flowerbed can be expensive yet look haphazard. The problem isn't usually the price of the plants, but too many varieties, a lack of repetition, and an uncluttered layout.
In this video, I show 10 ready-made plant combinations for sun, partial shade, shade, dry soil, and wetter locations. For each combination, I discuss the three layers of the composition, the approximate number of plants, spacing, requirements, and common mistakes.
You'll see, among others, roses with catnip and lady's mantle, hydrangeas with haconechloa and cranesbills, hostas with ferns and astilbes, and lavender with capitate garlic and blue fescue.
The most important rule is simple: limit the number of species, repeat the same varieties, and create distinct layers. This way, even a small flowerbed with readily available plants can look calm, mature, and like a professionally designed plant.
