Perry Como was a presenter at the Emmy Awards the same or following year, and SCTV was one of the nominees. As Perry was reading off the list of nominees, he mentioned SCTV, paused for a moment and then said to the crowd, "I hear they're big fans of mine." This triggered a lot of laughs from the audience, many of whom had seen the sketch.
They played this at an Emmy show, or some award show and the crowd was in hysterics. Up until that point the gang were not sure what their status was with the industry, they knew they were funny......soon the whole world was laughing along!
What made SCTV different from SNL was that the impersonations actually worked as entertainment. Real talent, plus a genuine affection that never sank to ridicule.
