Yes, the media must hold government accountable. But accountability is not the same as perpetual negativity. The media also owe Nigerians the responsibility to educate, explain and provide context, especially on the direction, rationale and expected impact of government policies.
A country cannot build confidence, resilience and patriotism when its citizens are constantly taught to see only failure, hardship and hopelessness. We already have enough challenges; we don't need a media culture that magnifies despair.
Nigeria needs journalism that informs the people, challenges government where necessary, but also explains the bigger picture and gives citizens a reason to believe that the country can get better.
