Why is sinking the elbow emphasized so much in the internal martial arts?
In this video, Master Yap Boh Heong explains and demonstrates the principle of the sunken elbow and how it connects the arms to the torso, legs and root.
Drawing from his Southern Shaolin and Wuzuquan (Five Ancestors Fist) background, Master Yap explains how the body's fascial “strings” can be connected through the kua and shoulders, allowing power to be transmitted through the whole structure rather than generated by the arms alone.
He demonstrates:
• Why “if the elbow is not heavy, the hands cannot be heavy”
• The difference between sinking the elbow and simply pressing downward
• How the elbow connects the arms to the body's root
• The importance of keeping the elbow within the shoulder line
• How the principle develops from beginner to advanced levels
• How the elbow can remain heavy and connected while still moving freely
• How this principle relates to Tai Chi, Xingyi, Bagua, White Crane, Wing Chun and Southern Shaolin methods
• How connected fascia allows power to be released without excessive muscular tension or winding up
This was filmed during an informal training session with Master Yap Boh Heong, where we decided to turn on the camera and share the explanation and demonstrations.
