Most people think they know this story: France landed in Algeria in 1830, stayed for 132 years, and then left after a painful war. A page turned. It's the history of school textbooks. It's neat—and profoundly inadequate.

Because it leaves out the one thing that explains everything else: for over a century, Algeria wasn't a colony. Legally, it WAS France. Three departments, like Brittany or Provence, with prefects, mayors, and representatives in Paris. And on this legally French land, nine out of ten inhabitants weren't French citizens.

Why did France really go to Algeria? How could a territory declared French have exploded a century later? And why, more than sixty years on, has this rift still not healed?
